Ummm... no. Actually trhey came with 1.5 DIN sized units. An example of an aftermarket HU designed specifically for GM replacement:

IIRC, Pioneer was the only brand that made the din.5 head units.

Almost all GM vehicles from 1982 through 2004 or so are 1.5 DIN.
I've never seen a 1.5 DIN radio that has actually looked good. Most are pretty fugly, especially the Pioneers.
I actually have an Alpine 1.5 DIN head unit if anyone is interested, needs to be serviced but I'll let it go for cheap. Or give me some incentive to have it serviced and I'll sell it as a fully functioning unit.

The only way to get a double DIN radio to mount in the stock location would be to butcher the dash all up and then it would look like crap, thats why you have never seen one done.
I have seen some 2nd gen trucks done this way, but the dash design is easier to modify and then fiberglass up to make it look right.
The other problem with the factory mounting hole is that it is really shallow, so the radio usually has to stick out from the dash which looks like crap also, i have a flush mount kit in my Ty that looks killer, but i had to modify the a/c duct behind the radio so i could mount the radio deeper in the dash.

Jenson, Boss, Pioneer and Alpine all made 1.5DIN.
Pioneer and Jenson are the only 2 I have seen lately.
I was going to spring for the older model Alpine but it doesn't support mp3 format CDs.
May have to settle on a Pioneer.
Considering all I have to listen to in the Ty right now is the turbo spooling it will be a welcome improvement.

@Bill Z it seems you know your stereos quite well. Can you recommend me one?
Sorry for being off-topic. I'm looking for a good stereo and can't make my mind up which one is the best.
There are so many aftermarket stereos that it's hard to find a good one. Many of them have one digit difference in their name. Anyways I've been reading reviews on the nets and they are all hype. Most of them downplay the negatives and hype features like 7" as if it would be that important. I've found a different blog. The thing I liked about the review blog is that it says it how it is. No sugar coating no BS. Even so there are ten or more head units on the site. How to pick the right one?
Any tips?
