"Flywheel" is a somewhat generic term that most correctly applies to manual transmissions. "Flexplates" are used on automatics, but are sometimes refered to as "flywheels". Lighter flywheels will help a manual car accelerate faster due to reduced weight. But, the SFI aftermarket flexplates are actually heavier than stock flexplates. The primary reason for an aftermarket flexplate is increased strength, not reduced weight.
