there has been much debate as to weather or not we should have a current donation's total displayed.

some are for, some are agians't it.

i for one am for it, i take great pride in seeing that total get higher, and higher.

it also it reminds me if i might have a paypal balance, that i could use some to throw a few buck's the syty.net way.

maybe someone want's to be the one who get's it to the next $1000 mark,

or mabye you log in, and check, only to see that someone has made a sizable donation, and the total has jumped! (im sure discussion would ensue...)

sure why the hell not/? every time ive donated it was 20 here 15 there, or what ever was in the PP account i couldnt find a use for. i feel good knowing that sy/ty.net will have funds to stay around a while

Some people might like the play by play effect they get when it reloads every time you navigate somewhere else. It just might go to the next % or 2

the red bar reloading every single time is kinda annoying. however, im gonna donate after xmas and i DO like to see the dollar amount go up.

we all use this forum to learn/teach. the very least we can do is help it stay here.

I don't think it's anyone else's business what we donate. Kinda like church or whatever. You donate or not and we all profit from the collective knowledge regardless. Just my :2cents:. I won't stop donating if posting the donations is the decision.

You could get rid of that progress bar though.:roll: I think a donation drive once or twice a year is fine with maybe a report of gross and expenses but that could get outa hand also. You guys got enough to do as it is. Ah the heck with it..:rotf:

Well, its all well and good, but considering this is already a small site, charging people would just drive people away even more. Donations are completely voluntary, forcing people to pay even $5 would piss people off and do more harm than good.

There is no problem with the donations themselves, that is not what this thread/poll is about.

when you donate, there is a question as to weather you want the public to view your contributions, or remain anonimis (sp) totaly up to the donater either way.

this thread is only as to weather or not we want to see a running total, on the home page.


p.s i agree the little progress bar loading on every page is a little annoying.:roll:

I wasn't going to comment, but I stumbled onto the page where it shows who voted, how. Because I voted in favor, I feel compelled to explain my decision. A break down of the voting may help:

class of voter in favor (%) against (%)

all (37) 25 (68%) 12 (32%)

Donators (25) 18 (72%) 7 (28%)

Admins (3) 1 (33%) 2 (66%)

The highest percentage group are Donating members that are in favor. And Donating Members make up 68% of the voters. So, Donating members are overwhelmingly in favor of having the dollar amount, and number of donators displayed. I'm reluctant to surmise why this may be so. So here's why I'm in favor.

In the week that it has been gone, it appears that donations have dropped off by 60%. In the week prior, there were 12 donations, that totaled $240. That is an increase of 5% of the "goal" ($5,000) (each 1% is $50.00 donated). In the week since, it's gone up 2%, that's $100.00

People like to see immediate results. They want to see their name in Green. They make a donation, they like seeing the 'meter' jump accordingly, and their name change to Green.

I like this site. I want it to stay around. I know nothing about the finances of it, and can only speculate, but I'm sure they are significant. I think the display of the "amount and number of donators" has a significant positive impact on donations, which is supported by observation.

I think it should be put back up, and the results monitored for a trend on the effect it has on donations.

Keep it from reloading every time I click on a page would be nice. I wish it would just display current donations, not increment up everytime. I think we should display it however.

Poll has closed. Here's the breakdown of how the 'classes' voted. All voters 2 to 1 IN favor, Donating Members 4 to 1 in favor, and Admins are 3 to 1 against having the dollar amount donated be displayed, so that's probably the way it will go.

I think my argument in favor, that I made here has merit. The meter is still at 45%, and it's been 4 days.

agreed, poll is closed, and with 47 voters i think we got a good cross section of the sy/ty community. more than 2/3 for a total being displayed, is kinda a shocker. i figured it would be neck and neck.
i dont know what will come of this, or what the admin's/ moderators will decide to do if anything, but please know i have no power as a moderator/...etc, so any change will have to come from much higher up than me.
i only posted the poll, because it seemed like so many people, seemed so passionate about seeing a current total, and i figured the fairest way was to put it to a vote.

ok, the total is at 49% and i think it would be neat if i were the one who got us to the half way mark of 50%.

but without a current dollar amount total, i have no way of knowing if $10 $20 $32 $58 is needed to reach that goal.

i would hate to donate $50 only to find out $51 would have put us at 50% and we are still stuck at 49%.

i dunno whats up with your computer, but it was at 51% for well over a week before your previous 49% post, and is now currently at 52%

maybe this thing is totally inaccurate? anyone else see 52% cause it appears that way on all 3 of my computers.
