Re: Do you do your own mechanic work?

I do whatever I can in my apartment garage (two complexes ruined by me so far!) and farm out the rest. I've found that I'm very willing to try to fix almost anything by myself, especially if I don't have a clue how difficult it will be before I dive in.

Re: Do you do your own mechanic work?

My truck has mostly been worked on by me with few exeptions.
Once it went back to the dealer for a "Cold Start" Mem-Cal campaign at no charge and also had a hole in the boot on the prop shaft they also replaced no charge (Was still under warrranty).
Once it broke down when my mother took the truck to go get sandwiches and it was an ignition problem (cap and rotor worn down) and guys from a local shop ran out and pushed her out of traffic and she wouldn't let them touch it otherwise (trained right). She called me and I told her to let them fix it. So they put a cap/rotor in it and she was on her way. I replace cap/rotor each year no matter what now.

That is it other than Inspections each year. I have done everything else.

When you own a SY/TY you can't afford to pay anyone else to do the work!

Re: Do you do your own mechanic work?

On the Sy? virtually all. Will be pullin' the engine any day once I get the truck re-situated. (Not enough room in the garage.) No machine work though but if a wrench will fit on it I can prolly work on it. Notice I said "work" not "fix.":rotf: Actually looking forward to pulling the engine. It will be a new experience. Years ago I had a small fleet of big trucks and did almost all my own work including the occasional engine rebuild. The one other family member that "got the gene" restores old Sterling trucks.

Almost of all it, except when I don't feel like it, all body work gets farm out.

Re: Do you do your own mechanic work?

I would have to say before owning my typhoon I really didn’t have that much experience working on cars, I just changed oil and simple stuff. I had a few friends that were mechanics and they helped me out. Then when things started to break I figured out real quick that I didn’t have the money for someone else to do the work, so I taught myself to weld, and do some body work, and read up on alot of things on this forum, and have acquired many tools from engine hoists to transmission jacks, and I’ve only had the truck for 3 years! Each year a different stage, year one was welding in new floor pans and fixing all the rust, year two was swapping out the torque converter, and year 3 was replacing the motor. And a whole bunch of other parts breaking along the way that I would rather not even tally up, even though I keep the receipts in folder, and maybe one day I'll add them up. :squint: So yea ever since I bought my typhoon 3 years ago I have done all the work on it thanks to this forum and alot of people on here

After owning 13 first gen S10's, 2 2nd gens, and 2 Typhoons, I'll wrench on those but the Trailblazer SS is a WHOLE new ball game to me, so I let my dealership buddy do the maintnance/warranty work for me on that one.

Re: Do you do your own mechanic work?

I do all of mine. Obviously I don't have a machine shop but I assemble the motor. Only thing I really take my truck to anyone for is tires and alignment.

Thanks to this site, I'm learning to do most of the work. Some stuff I just can't do at home, so it gets farmed out...

Everything, essentially. Except for machine work on the block, and a few other little things like tires
