Distributerless Ignition possiblity.. (working on it)

Was out here at SEMA all week and looked for SyTy related parts.... have you guys discussed using a fluiddamper? That way one doesn't have to worry about the damper slipping and it seems it would be pretty easy to put a hall-effect sensor on one... just a thought.

Damper slip isn't an issue, since we're using the crank hub. If that slips, you've got bigger problems. :)

Cost, too, is the big problem with the fluidamper.

Yeah, at over $200 piece for the Fluidampr units, that further inflates the cost of the swap by an additional $150. For what little you'd gain in the Fluidampr (if anything), it's just not worth the extra $.

any updates?

None, other than the fact that we're busy working on the brackets.
There are a few "gotchas" with the PS and AC brackets in place.

We did this on a buddy's TY we used a Mitsu 300gt VR4 coil pack. A ford Explorer Crank sensor and had a Balancer cut for a 36-1 tooth cuttingand bought an MSD Dist plug. Of coarse we used a Mega Squirt stand alone ECU, But its running and we have full tuning of the timing. It runs great.

Sorry i wasn't trying to hijack the thread, Just thought what we did might help you out. i have pics if you need them.

Curious as to how you mounted the sensor....

We had the Machine shop make up a mount out of aluminum. On the left side of the crank, There was just enough room and we used a factory bolt hole for it.

I have 2, There kinda shitty but ill get them up after i get off of work. But you can see were and how we mounted it. As well as the Balancer that we have the teeth cut into.

Here are 2 pics that we took. I cant really take any more due to the truck is back in Omaha Ne, but i might be able to have him take more. We got the Dist plug off of Summitracing.com with a Cam sync in it for around a Hundred. The rest of the parts we just got from a Junk Yard. We used Mitsubishi Coil packs due to the Greater heat and spark they put out. And if you use a Forf Explorer Crank sensor out of a 4.0, They seem to have a greater sensitivity reading. With this complete set up we have full control over timing under full boost, every day driving, and what ever we want.

The main problem that we are dealing with is were trying to get a ideal base map of timing from a stock truck so we can better dial it in.

If you click on the Pics you can get a bigger Image

After pulling out a lot of crap out of the bed of my sy I stopped to look at the free 97+ engine I picked up from a friend. This motor has the crank sensor on it already. I was thinking of using it for a cheap build since I have a nearly complete set of TRW forged pistons on late model rods. and the crank just needs to be turned... What would I need to do different to set up this motor for Distributorless ignition....

oh yea...forgot about this. Funny becuase i just found the balancer in my room too and remember i need to ship the damn thing back to hood. Sorry Mike for being so slackard!

I'll deisgn the 7 tooth wheel tonight or tomorrow and get a drawing up

Actually, Hood, whats this dampner cost? Maybe i'll just pay you for it so i can hang onto it.

Ok, I just don't have time to read through 12 pages, so forgive me if this has already been asked, but...

What is the advantage to going to this style setup? The reason I ask this is most big power buick guys I know (Stage II motors) seem to be making MORE horsepower by converting TO a distributor, and here we are trying to go in the other direction.

becuase changing caps/rotors/wires/plugs all the time (well for those that actually can drive their truck) gets real old.

Ok. just wanted to make sure that this wasn't a search for more power :)
