Difficulty level for building forn diff

I am wondering how hard is it to build a front diff. I am pretty sure mine is toast, I took it out tonihgt but couldnt get the damn ting apart. After doing a search, I found out why, didnt realize the axle tube needs to be beat out. Still, I dont know how to set pre load or anything like that, does that make this a job I shouldnt be trying without any kind of experience or even a book?

Mike I wouldn't consider it too difficult of a job with the right tools and definitely a good set of directions. I've had a couple of them partualy apart a couple times and it's no biggie. Yeah just pop the axles out with a rubber mallet or such, they have a retaining clip holding them in.

Yeah, too late, I just dropped it off this morning. Gonna cost me $400. Hope that is a fair price.

Setup of diff's is an art in some ways. Not difficult or hard, but you do need a dial indicator and mag base. Sometimes on diff's you need to press bearings on and off a few times also. I believe our front diff does NOT need that and there are adjustable nuts inside.

I have heard our front diff is one of the hardest to do. For $400 for something you might only do once might be worth it to you.
