Different A/C problems

The problem I'm having is once in a while the fan does not blow. It barely leaks out of the vents then all of a sudden it comes on and works properly on all fan settings. I utilized search and the things I need to check are blower motor ground ( looks good to me ), purple wire ( looks good too ), the fan switch ( don't know how to check this one ). I am looking for some help to determine where to start. It seems to me that if the blower motor works most of the time and goes off on ocassion them there is my problem but, how can I check to see if it really is just the blower motor?

TIA

Re: Different A/C problems

Check to see if you have voltage at the motor when it won't work. You can get a cheap test light from any parts store. Then you can work backwards to find the problem. The resistor isn't a factor if it doesn't work on high as that is controled by the relay. Then go to the switch and brown wire that feeds the voltage. The motors a lot of time have the brushes stick with age. If you have voltage tap the motor lightly and see if it starts.

Check to make sure the connector on the blower switch isn't melted and giving intermittent contact.

How do I check the switch? I have a Chiltons on the way so I will look in there when it arrives. It did not work again yesterday so I left it on for a while but, it did not come on . I turned it off and then back on again and it came right on. WTF.

Re: Different A/C problems

www.rockauto.com has both the switch and a replacement connector:
switch: Motormite 85169 $12.25
connector: ACDelco # PT115 $19.36

Switch may be cheaper elsewhere (O'reilly has it).

Re: Different A/C problems

Sorry to bring this back up but, after I checked the wires and blower motor, I still had no luck. So I went to the dealer. Bad idea! I told them the problem and I need the entire system checked. They told me it was the blower motor. I replied it works fine when it works. "Yea it cuts out after it gets hot" ?? Ok order the part and I'll be back. Come back for the blower install (against my better judgement) and worked fine after repair. Two days later out again and 90+ temps and black leather w/o A/C = Bullshit! Take it back and now they say it is the relay. They put one in and it doesn't work. Come back tomorrow and we'll put in another one. So the fourth time there I'm there for over two hours for the relay on the firewall? I guessed they put the new relay in and still no luck. They come in and say fixed but, we had to open up the HVAC controls to clean the contacts. So four trips and the run around and, 190 bucks (only for the blower motor and install) later. It is now fixed but I know now the cleaning was all that was needed in the first place.

Re: Different A/C problems

I'm having a problem with my AC blower not engaging to (4th) speed. 1,2,3 work fine and somtimes the highest setting (4th) will work after running it for awhile. Also the temp setting does not go all the way down to cold. You can feel it tighten up.
