I think the actual diffs are the same.. The only difference is the axle that comes out of it on the pass side.. The 4x4 version has a vacuum actuated coupler that locks and unlocks that shaft for 4x4 and 2x4 operation.. Our version is just a solid axle at that point..

I believe you can unbolt our axle from the diff and bolt it right to the diff from a regular 4x4... Not 100% sure though.

does that mean you can take one out of a 4x4, put it in ours, and have an electronic 2wd/4wd?

as for the front differential.... there are some differences.

1) 4x4 is a u-joint (single carden) flange, ours is for a CV plunging joint.
2) the 4x4 includes a shift arm and nonsense, ours does not.

can a 4x4 diff be made into an awd diff? sure. a little work, but sure.

You have to get the right ratio... We have 3.42 gears...

Here are the RPO codes you will find in the glove box.. you want to get one from a doner vehicle with a GU6 code...

GT4 AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GT7 AXLE REAR, 3.33 RATIO
GT8 AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GTY AXLE, WIDE TRACK
GU1 AXLE REAR, 2.41 RATIO
GU2 AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GU4 AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 POSI-TRAC REAR - will be coupled with one of the above listed rear gear RPO's
