I'm telling him to pull the plugs so we can look at them, i'll take some pics too. But just thinking out loud again, i think you are on something here.
If the O2 pick up a lean condition and the ECU start dumping fuel and the DS gets to rich flooding the plugs and when that happens the engine dies just flat out. Coulden't it cause the dieseling that occure when it died at 1200 rpm too?

Id pull the plugs and see what one side looks like vs the other and that would possibly help give you a hint as to whats going on.
