I guess it could but in closed loop the O2 should pick up on things being lean since it gets a combo of both banks and the ECM should start dumping fuel which would make the DS stupid fat while the PS possibly being lean due to the leak. Id pull the plugs and see what one side looks like vs the other and that would possibly help give you a hint as to whats going on.

Thinking out loud myself....

Hey, good idea

I'm telling him to pull the plugs so we can look at them, i'll take some pics too. But just thinking out loud again, i think you are on something here.

If the O2 pick up a lean condition and the ECU start dumping fuel and the DS gets to rich flooding the plugs and when that happens the engine dies just flat out. Coulden't it cause the dieseling that occure when it died at 1200 rpm too?

Just thinking loud again

Jimmy start pulling those plugs out, come on you can't have the truck in the garage all summer, i need to wup your a$$ :rotf: :rotf:

I doubth the chip/inj combo has anything to do with idle and truck dies like you turn off the ignition after less then 5min. If i was asking about WOT i would agree with you, ok?

But maybe i know even less then you and are a bigger moron?

I had the same exact problem with my idle. It ended up being the components in the distributor were going bad and/or needed to be cleaned. Everything in my distribuotr was corroded. I replaced the Ignition module, the pick-up coil, lightly sanded all the points on the 6 point metal star and the 6 points the star go by on the distributor housing to take off the rust that had accumulated. Now it idles sweet and my problem with the surging and dieing at idle are gone. Might be something to look at.

I had similar problems recently.....did not go to all the trouble you have so far, but my problem was fixed with a good cap/rotor and a swap of the plug wires. Normal everyday proven bad idle and miss cure....cap and rotor are cheap......worth a shot to your friend I would think (just watch that it seats properly).

The dist looked pretty bad when we replaced the ign module, so i have him check that. Thanks for the tips.

My friend is in the process of finding a good cap and rotor here in Sweden, most places here only sell that crap with aluminium connectors :(

We are going to try a bunch of everybodys suggestions next week, this weekend it's a big Jap-Crap meet that i have to go to, just to get a good laugh. Swedish kids are crazy about body kits and wings, the bigger the picknick table is on the trunk the cooler the car is   Give me a break for gods sake :squint:

If it starts and then dies its LEAN. With better heads the flow is increased so add a high flow muffler that i guess you got and you run out of fuel. I had the same problem and i had to add tons of fuel at Afterstart VS cooland map.(Fast)

Glowing headers come from restricted exhaust or too little advance . With 30* @ idle id say your fine with the Vortecs.
Also take a look at your valve adjustment on the glowing side

Re: Dies on idle (gone true 275 post in search)

have you tried checking min. idle, just turn key off jumper A and B of the ALDL (this is diag mode should flash a code 12 when in it) turn the key on then let the IAC reset for about 10 sec or so then unplug the IAC. Start the engine (should be warmed up before you do this) the engine should idle at around 450-500 rpm if it doesn't then adjust the idle set screw until it dose. when your done just shut it off and plug the IAC back up

Re: Dies on idle (gone true 275 post in search)

Ok, i thought i'll update this thread a little. What we found so far is that the valves were adjusted a little to hard , mostly on the pass side where the header was glowing. So i have readjusted all valves.

Another thing was the dist. lots of surface rust and the clip/lockring that hold the pickupcoil in place was broken so the coil and cover were loose as hell, dist have been cleaned spotless and new clip installed.

We are waiting for a cap + rotor with brass inserts, hopefully get it today and if we do, test start tonight. Hope that was it and that it runs good now.

I'll update tomorrow if we got the cap and rotor today

Re: Dies on idle (gone true 275 post in search) **UPDATED again**

Valves adjusted, dist. cleaned and fixed, new brass cap / rotor. Still wont run on idle :(

Base timing on 0* now, did the IAC check with ALDL jumped and IAC disconnected. Impossible to get a lower rpm then 700 with IAC disconnected and ALDL jumped, i'm guessing vacuum leak somewhere (manifold) that keep the idle that high even with the throttleblades closed completely (58mm TB).

My friend is driving it with the IAC disconnected b/c the idle is perfect on 700rpm, can't go WOT anyway due to 33# and Vortec heads.

We have given up for the summer, address this problem this winter when we have more time. I like to send a big, big thanks to all the ppl that replied in this thread. You jenks are awesome

Most likely found the problem, owner running LB4 sparkplugs in his Vortech heads. We'll see this summer how it runs, in process of upgrading the cam and installing F.A.S.T with 84# injectors. Thanks a million for all the help we got last summer/fall
