hi, i jsut purchased a 93 ty w/56000m, when it is under load it detonates, i t has been very cold out so i havent fixed it yet, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

wehn i test drove the truck it didnt ping at all, on the way home i accidently filled it with 87 octane :x tehn when i got on it i noticed the pinging it has been 5 tanks of 93 later and i also checked the timing (which is at 4 degrees retard)

any suggestions would help alot

thanks

the timing mark only reads positive, so i imagine you have it 4 deg advanced instead of retarted. not insulting, just checking, incase you dont know that.

also, get a scan tool. if your hearing audible knock you have SERIOUS problems. the ECM removes timing under detonation condition. if its detonating and the ECM isnt removing timing, it could be because you have one of those HORRID kennebell motor grenading chips. remove the ECM and see whats inside. if its got an aftermarket chip you better do some homework to see what it is.

dont ever use 87 octane gas. its a really bad idea. the only way it will run without detonation is if you stay completely out of boost. even then, i wouldnt trust it.

it didnt read 4 degrees retard it was about where 4 would be at if it where there, did that kenne bell chip come in a kit because the truck has a kenne bell cold air kit on it, i want to make it stock so that will probably be coming off any way, but if there is a chip there cant it just be taken out and put back to stock!

thanks for the reply

i was also told to reset the computer, becasue the shiity gas could have triggered something in the comp, is this true?

did you unplug the tan wire when you checked the timing?

pulling the ecm-b fuse will reset the computer.

While your at it, you should probably go through and check the plugs. Whatever you do, don't get into the boost until the problem is solved.

E FWIW I have used 87 octane on trips on several occasions. 5 lbs. of boost with no knock. kept datamaster running until I was convinced I wasn't going to hurt it. DON'T try this at home unless you can monitor the knock and see how your truck does.

I also recently ran a tank of low octane gas and was amazed at how much knock was present. The knock was wicked during low rpm, no boost, part throttle situations. Carefully drove the tank empty, filled with the good stuff and it seems to be OK now. I won't make that mistake again!

What ever it takes!!
check and see if your IC pump is working, I had the same problem with mine under boost. The fuse is right behind the Alternator in a black case.

I too have just experienced detonation knocking. And the puzzling thing is I had never had it happen. I've had my TY since Jan. But, Sunday I flushed and refilled my IC and Monday when I got gas I did this. I put a couple of dollars of 87 octane in with my debit card to close my checking account, then I filled up with 93 octane. I noticed knock yesterday as I drove home, but only under acceleration and positive boost. I thought about putting a can of octane boost in till this tank runs out. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Stay out of boost, drive truck. Fill up with 93 octane when at 1/4 tank.
