desicions..

since my tranny took a dump again i have been really wondering about converting to 2wd and using a t400 trans. I just cant stand the feeling thinking whens the next thing gonna break. without the awd in my eyes thweres alot less to go wrong with the drivline. Plus it would be a hell of alot quicker too. If i go thru with this i plan on getting a a nice rear done, tubbing the back, running a fuel cell and installing a cage. Would parts from a 92 blazer 2wd (front end parts) make it all possible to do the conversion>?

so keep it awd or go 2wd any opinions?

Re: desicions..

If you want to go 2wd, SELL THE TRUCK!!! Get a blazer or S10 and mod the hell outta of it. SyTy should have AWD, plain and simple.

Re: desicions..

3500 or so, but a good build 700r4 will hold up, if you don't let it downshift WOT a 1000 times, i think waller will be the next step before buying a 4l80E. how much HP do you make?

Re: desicions..

Keep it AWD or buy something else IMO.
You would probably destroy the resale value if you did this.

Re: desicions..

I'd say bite the bullet and put in an 80E.

With the 700, its never quite the question of if it will break, but when? A well built 80E will be a WHOLE lot more durable.

BTW, the 80E is basically a Turbo 400 with a .75 overdrive, lockup convertor, and electronic control (which means you can program shift firmness so that at partial throttle the shifts don't knock your teeth out, but at full throttle they're hard).

Re: desicions..

Talk to JWaller or George Blake, they're the transmission gods around here. If you plan on adding any more mods or racing it, the 80 might be the way to go.

Re: desicions..

..well...I've contemplated the same thing (AWD vs. RWD and TH400 vs. 4L80e) many times. Both have their merits. As for the argument that your truck might not be considered a Sy/Ty anymore, get over it! Did your truck come with a larger-than-stock turbo? How 'bout that 3" DP? And the A2A IC? Meth kit? Forged internals? VORTECs? It's your truck, and people should complement that. Your VIN still says its a Sy/Ty, so whatever.

The trans is also a personal preference.....TH400 will be cheaper to do, but you will not have OD. To some, that's very important. It wasn't to me, and mine isn't a trailer queen. For your information, I purchased a Rossler TH400 with the proper adaptor and TC for ~$2200. Add to that shortening the rear driveshaft and making a longer new front propshaft, and I was dome. Ed Hess is running one of these, and from what he says, he hasn't had to do 1 thing to his trans since it went in. Have you seen his times?

I'll get off my soapbox now....

Re: desicions..

He broke the output shaft. On his though, I don't know if the issue was as much of the output shaft as much as it was the truck was jouncing really bad. Basically a "chatter" that quickly loaded and unloaded the trans and the output shaft gave. The smoother the launch and less jouncing, the better. If your talking 400, you need to step away from the 700. People ONLY talk about 400's when they wanna race.

Re: desicions..

thanks for all your opinions guys as much as i wanna keep the truck i think im takin the motor, ecu, harness out and putting the motor into a 89 mustang. Has a fully built 9 inch rear with only a couple passes on it. 10 point Certified chromoly cage, tubs in the rear, fuel cell, and some sort of drag setup suspension didnt find out the info on that yet.Beleive it or not the car weighed in with the driver in it 2660lbs when it had the 8cyl. hes selling it as a roller for 2000

Blake, it might not be the output shaft because lol well i busted one already and that made a loud bang this time it didnt do that. but it could be the output shaft i know nothing about building transmissions. I am going to need you to price me a t400 w/ transbrake and some other goodies in it.

Re: desicions..

Mr. Blake,

Whats your best deal you know bang for buck on a tranny....For a daily driver that gets the occasional run from light to light but some 1/4 mile runs 4 to 5 times a summer but then just driven like a lil ol lady for must of it life.
