Custom wheel sizing

Got a question for a set of wheels that I may have made up...
Just making sure I'm using the calculator in the sticky correctly, Say I kept the same width all around but just went up in diameter to 17" I would have the same offsets as stock right? (41mm front and 13mm rear). So basically the diameter should have no bearing on it. Just make the wheel width whatever I want from 8" to 11" and adjust the offset until the wheels stick out the same as stock. Then I am giving those numbers to the manufacturer. Does this sound correct???
Also what are some common custom sizes people have used for 17" wheels ?
