Best bet for cold air in so cali is to go to big bear and drive around.

Not sure but I think most people that don't go the retail kit route, just use a 90degree elbow with a filter clamped on it... or somewhere along those lines

You will get the least restrictive intake with an elbow, a short pipe and a large filter. This way you have to remove your battery, but otherwise it's not a big deal. As far as getting cold air to the filter, I made a few runs without the passenger's side head lamp last year. It made no difference in intake temps... There are a few home made cold airs, the best I've seen is in Gary's Sy in Florida. However IMHO these intakes will restrict the flow to your filter and give you only marginaly lower intake temps...

I think you almost "have" to relocate your battery to do an inexpensive CAI...i saw a pic of one a while back...a red and grey TY...i think it belongs to Jimmy on this board...i don't know if his is aftermarket or not...but it's chrome...i made one similar...also, I relocated my battery using a black boat battery box from napa...it took more work than it took money to do...be sure and grommet the batt cables when you go thru the body...I also ran the pos. thru some heater hose as far to the front of the truck as possible in the frame...Mine actually came with a shitty KB intake set up and they had chopped at the inside of the hood reinforcements to get it to close...i've since replaced that hood...from what i've seen, the stock tube that crosses over looks too sandwiched over the upper shroud to be really effective...never seen one in person though...
Cheap cold air setup, requires battery relocate. 3" *thinwall* PVC, elbow from Turbonetics, Tupperware lid, K&N cone filter, (inside) 1 gallon paint can. Side spigot on paint can is to a 3" inlet fitting on the inner fender panel - there is direst access to outside air at the bottom of this panel. Foam stuffed above the spigot in the fender prevents hot engine air from entering. The two spigots connected w/ heavy wall PVC pipe coupler kit. Quick 'n dirty, actually looks pretty good from the top, installed.

Nope, I sure don't; I'll shoot one when I get the latest project installed - butterfly wastegate. Was one of my first mods, done before I was datalogging, so unknown effect on MATs. MAT generally runs ambient + 20°F (EGR deleted) if that's any help. Original intake filter passage had two 90° PVC bends in it - going to a single 90° and a 45 bend raised boost by 2psi alone. REAL important to have as little restriction pre-turbo as possible.
