Considering a stock Typhoon...

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

Yeah, that brake pedal cover definetely looks like it has more wear than 27k miles. Mine was'nt that bad when I replaced it, and it had like 102K on it. On another note it still has the hard intercooler lines , and all the writing is still on the turn signal/ multi- function switch. I've seen lower mileage trucks with a lot of the writing wore off, although it could have had a new multi- function switch at some point.:dunno: Overall it looks decent, I don't know about $18,000 decent, but still nice. If I was looking at it, the LAST thing I would look at is the ODOMETER. As many people know and have already stated, odometer fraud is very common on these trucks. Just use good judgement and common sense, as to whether or not you think it is a 27k mile truck and not believe what the odometer says. Also do'nt rush and buy the first thing you see simply because it is available. It would be terrible to pay that kind of money for something that might have 127k miles on it instead of 27K. Anyway good luck on whatever you decide to do.

All are very good suggestions. Just as important is, doing a carfax to make sure the miles are actual with no reports of damage.

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

This truck was for sale at the St. Louis Car Museum http://www.stlouiscarmuseum.com/ last year. They must have listed it on Ebay more than a half dozen times. I remember seeing it for sale as early as November '07 and as late as March '08. I think the buy it now or best offer was $19,000 the last time the auction ran, so it may have sold for as little as $16,500, but I'm just guessing on the sale price. I do think its strange that it now has Z06 wheels. Last year it was wearing the stockers and there is only 100 more miles on it now. Why would someone replace the rims and tires if they were only going to drive it 100 miles and then store it and then immediately sell it?

So why do SYTY's "fall out of tune" so easily? Do the ignition systems break down that easily from the heat? It almost sounds like alot of work for not much return..correct me if I am wrong? Maybe I was just spoiled with the Lightning. I knocked off a full second on my ET and gained almost 6mph for under $1000 and about 2 hours worth of work (and a 6 pack) and never had to look back! Once a Typhoon tuned up to where it should be- why is it so necessary to keep tinkering with it? If I wasn't such an S10 fan from my younger years, I would have walked away already......

Thanks for all of the good reading and information--this is one of the best auto forums that I'm a member of:tup:

Become a syty member because you like to work on vehicles, you like the look and feel of truck, and you may get to drive it once in awhile. Don't try to mix up that order.

Its one of those, you gotta be there things to realize.

Ever seen the sign that says FAST, CHEAP, GOOD you can only pick 2 things at the same time?

Well syty's are like that in most ways. RUNS, FAST, NO MAINTENCE

it's not that they fall out of tune that easily. Just keep a fresh cap, wires and plugs in it. I still haven't been able to find that $%$# cap(isn't it in the front,,,, I mean why would it be way back there in the back where it can't be reached:lol:). And plugs,,,,,:squint: kidding aside. The Sy can pick up a second and at least that much mph (or so I've read) for about the same money. Just remember these things are 18 year old now;) Go for it!

Here is why I love my Ty,

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/164972.htm

This was an SRT10 I raced about a year or so ago. I only had about 1k invested in mods. Sure I have spent more than that on repairs but its well worth it to take down all the suckers that think they are on top of the world, Lightning owners included:lol: FWIW, I have not yet run in to one that could give me a decent run. I know they are out there but apparently no where near here. When you watch that vid, notice how you can see the light go green and I sit there for a second while the SRT splits. Then, take notice how fast he gets run down and how I am pulling on him still at the end, not by a whole lot but enough to send him home with his tail between his legs. Maybe you should go test drive a good running truck, launch it and then really see what you think. A Lightning wont touch a SYTY IMO. Screw reliability. If you have the bucks, spend em, if not, buy an Accord and don't get in to racing.:rotf:

The best part of that video link was the comments from the Mopar hard-ons below! I think it is funny that one little racing video of an Syclone jumping all over a SRT-10 could piss people off!

Well done:tup:

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

Joe, I think you could be happy with a Typhoon, but you really have to decide if you have the time & energy to be a Syty owner.

I think it will take a bit of time and money to get a truck where you want it to be. Some people had/have similar plans and they turn into long term projects, as they don't have the time or energy or money to complete them. Do you think you are the type of person to see a project through? Do you have the mental capacity to sort out technical problems? Do you have the time to troubleshoot difficult situations? Do you have the patience for all of that? They are vehicles with special needs. Are you willing to spend $3k on a transmission and install it yourself on the weekend? What about $4-5k on a motor?

If you can do all of the above, continue on your quest to find a decent Typhoon.
If you are just looking to jump behind the wheel of a fun vehicle every now and then but not be required to perform any work in the garage... look elsewhere.

[ FWIW, Joe is an old friend, and I think one of his first encounters with a Syty was when my old Sy160 (my brother's at the time) spanked his S10 from a stoplight.:D ]

And just because you had a Lightning, here's Sy160 racing one

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

Hey- that race with your brother was unfair! That was before my SS had the PI torque converter, headers or the Drag Radials!......Plus I had Maloney with me so there was an extra 200lbs in my truck:rant:

That's my story and I am sticking to it........

BTW Bri--it is ok to come out of the closet. I know how long you have been hiding your love of Ford's.

Excuses excuses. Converter, headers, and DR's on a 14 second truck make it a low 14 second truck that you can't drive in the rain. All seriousness though, didn't you total that thing in a snowstorm?

And I do love Fords ... FOR LUNCH

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

Black ice + 5am + Interstate 80 overpass = $7k damage to truck + dirty underwear:(

Geeez- you gotta make me think about that huh?

That truck was technically "totalled". The insurance told me that they would either fix it or total it. You know how I get emotionally attached to vehicles--so I had them fix it. It rose from the dead and got a few more years out of it before I traded it in on the Lightning. I actually got pissed after they took the plates off of it and all 6 of the porters at Ford were on it like vultures in the shop!! ( I have issues)

So when I win the lotto- I plan on buying another 95 s10 SS and putting a Syclone AWD drivetrain in it. Maybe Chip Foose will read this and give me one after he builds it on his show???

Re: Considering a stock Typhoon...

You already heard from the guys here, but I just thought that I would let you know after looking at the pictures in the link that you posted.

That the brake pedal has alot more wear then the brake pedal on my truck had with 53,000 miles when I pick it up.

That looks like dirt/mud to me. :dunno:
