Re: Confused about tuning....keep chip AND tune?! --

I guess I am getting confused on if when I tune I am tuning

1) the actual ecm

OR RETUNING

2) an aftermarket chip ( to keep some of the options given by the chip )

Sorry....I probably sound like a retard, haha!!! ---

You have to start off of a bin.. from there you make changes to it to suite your needs via Tunercat software then you up load it via Ostrich or burn it to a blank chip via autoprom etc.

Your not actually making changes to the ecm but rather what ever chip you have installed or what to modify or erase and reburn.. I hope that makes some sort of sense

That totally makes sense now....so I use the ultimate and 3 bar map .... then tweak it from HIS settings to MY settings. I appreciate your patience :) ---

Just to clear up some things most of us take for granted as common knowledge.

The stock system is 2 bar. 1 bar (barometric pressure approx 14.7psi) is vacuum, 1 is boost. Anything over 1 bar of boost (~14.7psi) the sensor is maxed out at 5 volts, so the ECM has no clue if you are at 15 or 30 and it will deliver the same fuel/timing for 15, even if you do have more boost.

3 bar gives us 2 bars of boost (~29 psi, most assume 30). So now the map sensor at 5volts is reading 30psi not 15 (this is why the boost gauge in your dash changes).

So now at 15psi, the map sensor maybe around 3 volts or so. If you have a 2bar chip in there it will assume based on that voltage you are at ~6psi, not the 15 the 3 bar sensor is reporting.

This is why you need both sensor and chip to work.

Wow, I knew the basics but that was a great explanation. Thanks for the time ---
