Cobra Head Clearance

I am trying to get my sy back up and going and am running into a couple minor problems and this is one of them.

Everyone thats running the 4" cobra head how do you get it to fit?
I remember I post a while ago that says you must cut it down some to fit it, so I cut about 3/4" off and it just barely fits past the trans line. What I am wondering is if I can cut it a little more just for a little extra clearance.
Its been a long time but I remember hearing someone had there cobra head sucked into there turbo because it was too close to the inside of the turbo. I have roughly 1.5 inch clearance between the inside of the cobra head to the edge of the turbo inlet.

Thanks for the help hopefully soon I will be able to hear how nice that 3.5" downpipe sounds

Re: Cobra Head Clearance

do you have the low profile fitting for the upper tranny line??

if so, it takes alot of force to get it on....almost twice of what you would think!

Re: Cobra Head Clearance

Forgot to mention, I'm running a t-72 turbo with the 1" or so spacer between the turbo and header, also have a dequick aluminum radiator and I have a -6 to 1/4 npt 90 degree fitting for the upper trans fitting. Heater hose connection is on the side so thats not a problem.

Basically all I would like to know is what most people are running for inside clearance for the cobra head. I don't want to cut too much off and end up having my turbo eat some of the elbow.

Thanks!

I have a 3" core Griffin radiator T72 & 4" cobra elbow.
My elbow sits right against the radiator. I do not use the built-in radiator trans cooler just because of the clearance issue. I think I trimmed about 1/2" off of the cobra elbow to get it to fit. I could measure it tonight when I get home.

Re: Cobra Head Clearance

I know I have a 3" front mount but I never have measured the rad. I'm guessing its 2.5 because I can fit the trans cooler fitting with the corba head trimmed about 3/4" but it sure is a big pain in the ass to get it on the turbo.

I guess I will just leave it as is for now and see how it works out, its not touching anything now plus I have solids so there shouldn't be much movement anyway.

Thanks

Off your topic, but mind if I ask the deal with the 1" spacer? Was this to clear the AC? Where did you get it? I also am running a 72, and had clearance issues with the AC. So I'm having the AC bracket cut and welded.

Re: Cobra Head Clearance

Yup it was to clear the a/c bracket. I think its between 1" and 1.5". Nolan (10secty) made a lot of them back in the day from what I remember so he may be able to get you one still. I am not running it for the a/c bracket clearance since I don't have any of that stuff anymore but I have to use it to make the downpipe still fit.

One of these days I want to completely tear the truck apart and redo everything on it and make it all work nicely together but for now its just gotta get me my fix

I haven't drove this thing in 4 yrs and its been at least 3 since I have had a turbo vehicle of my own to drive.
