Centralia, Pa

I was just wondering if anyone has ever been there or knows anything about it. Thinking about going to visit the area soon and just curious if anyone else has been and what they thought. For those that have no idea what I am talking about its a town in Pa that used to be a coal town. In 1962 a trash fire set an expossed vien of coal on fire that spread to the underground mines and still burns today. Its is supposed to have enough fuel to burn another 250 years. I just thought it would be cool to see the town and wondered if any others had been.

I briefly drove by years ago. All the roads are closed so your on foot, its pretty much abandoned, homes long gone. The dangerous part is where it burned, the ground is very unstable and you can just fall through, hence why it was a brief trip. You can get by the roads but I'd be very leary, you just might lose your car in there. Its really just looks like a barren area. Again I really wasn't there long enough to explore for any real amount of time.

Thanks for the input. There actually are some people that still live in town from what I have seen online. There is a message board about the town and some of the residents post. From what I read on there the forum used to have more activity. It seems a lot of people still visit and some (about 10-12) still live in town.

I would be interested in buying some land there to camp and ride the quads.you can access 100's of miles of trails with the atv from there. I think the government owns it now and is not obtainable.

I recently became a member of tower city trail riders which is not far from there. waste land from the coal companies is heaven to the off road guys.

That quad riding in those areas sounds like fun. I do believe the state does own all the land there through iminent domain (sp) in the early 90's but didn't go through the hassle of fighting with the remaining people that stayed in town to get them out. In the 80's the federal goverment gave 42 millon toward relocation. I read on the forum about the town some trail riders have camped in town before near the graveyard.

Yeah I read that the idea for the town in that movie came from Centalia. Silent hill also I believe. I think it was called Centalia at first to keep people from knowing they were making a Silent hill movie

Hey, my buddy and I ride at Tower city and have for years....great place. If you ever want to hook up let me know. I recently sold my bike but am on the hunt for another, likely a 250cc bike or another Raptor. My buddy also has a built 686 Raptor....real nice. What do you ride?

Let me know, we should be going up in a few weeks.....he has a camp spot too.
