I'm having trouble removing the actual shifter mechanism, it appears that there is a snap ring, keeping the shifter cable on, but it has no holes in it. Anyone have any idea how to get it off? Much thanks.

Yea that's correct. It's called an E-clip. Best thing to use is a small (real small) flat blade screwdriver or seal & O-ring pick. Ihave used both and either are fine but if you have one that's magnetized, it will help if the clip tries to fly away. They just pry off / out sideways.
