Center cap refinishing question......

Hello all,

Does anyone have a picture of the fixture that's required to chuck up a center cap for a refinish cut?

My wheel man got the main portion of the wheels looking incredible but is baffled how to safely put a cut on the center caps.

Thanks in advance.

Use a 3/4" round piece of plywood with a arbor mounted on the back to fit into a lathe. To hold the cap to the wood use a bolt and grind the head down so it fits into the o-ring of the cap. Bolt the cap/bolt down to the plywood. You have to shim up the cap or tighten the bolt to get everything level to cut the cap. Kind of back yardish, but does work.

Re: Center cap refinishing question......

The guy should be able to " chuck it up" in a lathe. I do not have my center cap with me.. But I do remember examining the inner edge and I think I seen marks from jaws. If he's using a lathe he should be able to flip the jaws. In some cases you can do that.

I have this expirence in using a welding positioner. If your not sure Google that and look at the stepped pieces that are on the positioner. Same concept. You can flip them 180* to do bigger/smaller. Inside/outside?

I have worked around a few larger lathes and have seen them on there too..

When we cut the center caps we mount them right to the chuck on the lathe. Found a set of jaws that hold them perfectly. Took some testing and fitting to find the just right ones.

Thanks for the responses, guys!

The wheel shop doesn't have a set of jaws in that size range from what I gather.
I can see marks where he tried to chuck them up from the inside.
And I'm guessing he wasn't comfortable with the fit. Since it isn't a 90 degree edge, after all.
