CEL/Dies when gas applied - UPDATE FIXED

I would be grateful for some help if you could. This is for all stock 92 with 93K, less a few reliability mods (walbro, adjustable fpr, hardwire ic pump, starter relay). Been daily driven for the past 2 years without a hiccup.

Check engine light came on. Starts and idles perfect. Give it gas, it stumbles hard and will die if you give it more than what feels like 1/4" of throttle. If I slowly (and I mean slowly) roll on the throttle to get it past 1500 rpm, fuel pressure wont go past 40psi. Check engine light produces nothing other than 12, engine running or not, but idles really rough with engine on and A/B jumped.

Where would you start from here?
FPR?
Pump?

Also, I am not a day in/out mechanic so if you could elaborate just a bit in your response, man that would be cool.

Thanks in advance.

Check the following:

  • All vacuum lines
  • Catalytic converter not clogged (just went thru this!)
  • TPS (throttle Position sensor) in range
  • Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and ignition module

Do you have a infrared thermometer? If so start the truck up and let it run.....for a little bit....then go underneath the car and hit the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter and after the catalytic converter.....it's shouldn't read 150 degrees hotter than the front of the cat....if it does you have an emissions problem...these catalytic converter do get quite hot I might add but the temperature should stay within 150 from the entrance of exhaust to the exit.

How long has it been since you replaced the fuel filter?

Was having the same trouble still have not found the reason but mine only starts with ether. I have new plugs wires filter ignition module and fuel pump. Does yours start right up normal? Seeing the code 12 as well does the flash pause 2 flash code have to occur 3 separate times in a row then additional codes are flashed?

Re: CEL/Dies when gas applied

Sorry I haven't replied, Internet has been funky all day. I checked the CEL using instructions from a link that came from a search here. All I got to today was the cat. I limped the truck up my ramps, pulled the cat, it looked fine, then put her back together. I fired her up to bring her down and the CEL is off and she seems back to normal. I drive it to a local place to ask what they thought about the cat and on the way there, the CEL comes on and it starts stumbling again. They do a back presure test (I think that's what he called it) and it came back fine. I drive it home and the CEL is gone and not a single stumble, just a higher than normal idle in park. The only thing I noticed is fuel pressure still is below 40psi throughout the drive home. As far as maintenance on ignition or anything else, I have done nothing to the Ty other than oil changes. I'm stumped.

Re: CEL/Dies when gas applied

Sorry about the paragraph from hell. I'm on my phone bc the Internet is jacked.

Thank you all for the replies, I'm calling it a night. Taking out the cat and putting it back together with the truck 8 inches off the ground kicked my ass and I have the dreaded sore neck.

I will post tomorrow if I find something new. I'm just gonna go down the list of suggestions.

If you haven't put the catalytic converter back on yet stop.....take a flash light and shine it through one end. ...you should be able to see through it....if not it is getting plugged or is plugged.....

Re: CEL/Dies when gas applied

Anyone still have the little animation or at least a picture on where to pry on the rotor button with the wheel lock key? All those links to whitetyphoon are dead. I don't want to pry on something that is vulnerable.

NVM...I got it. Wow, that trick is awesome!!

Re: CEL/Dies when gas applied

Update for future reference for anyone else...

I checked all the above to no avail. It ended up being a bad ECM. A few little taps on the ECM and it would come in and out of it. Replaced the ECM, everything is brand new.

Also, I wanted to give a thanks to everyone with the suggestions. But especially DaveP, true help and enthusiast, thank you.
