Cap and rotor changed...Question?

But not without a fight. I searched and found the diagram that shows what plug wires go where on the dist. I made a diagram of what the previous owner had done cause he marked the wires and it looked alittle odd. So I start unplugging mine, smashing my hand while pulling off the rotor AND CURSING LIKE A DRUNKEN SAILOR. I had to trace all the wires to the respective cylinders to be sure what was what. So I put the originals wires back on in the right positions according to what I downloaded off the archives. Sure as shit my truck won't start.
At this point I am alittle pissed cause my hand hurts and my truck doesn't run. I had to move all the wires one position counter clock wise in order for the truck to start and run.

Does this mean my timing is off?
I started to take out the plugs and I am happy I did cause they look like doggie doo. I have new wires to replace the others and I am hoping this will solve my WOT stumble @ 3000 to 3500 RPM.

Pics will follow as soon as I can take them.
I am going today to get a timing light so I can see what it is. But the wire position on the cap perplexes me.

it just means thatr someone put the distributor one tooth off u can either fix it or just leave it like that ,just make sure your timming is right ,just put it on top dead center with the cap off and see were number one is on the cap then go from there

Here is the diagram I once used...

Then I made this one for my brother to use. He has the newer style 2000
The firing order and wire locations are the same, just awkward looking.

I was originally thrown off by his mislabling 3 as 5 and he had 6 as 2 and vice-a-versa.

Re: Cap and rotor changed...Question?

the easiest thing to do is pull number one plug.. put your finger over the plug hole while turning the motor over.. when air starts to push out, its on the compression stroke.. look at your damper, while slowly turning the motor over till you reach TDC with the pointer.. Look at the rotor and that is where # 1 should be.. Clockwise goes 1,6,5,4,3,2. put the plug wires on.

If you want to make sure the timing is accurate you need to do a TDC check and time it with a light to be sure.
