Canada Import

Hey Forum Readers;

Anybody out there with some knowledge HOW to import a 93 Typhoon to Canada?
One of my European friends will leave his home country for 1-2 years and want to take his Ty with him. Transportation is already clear BUT how can you license a Ty in CDN?

I remember from my US - import that you have to hold the title and that there is no loan or whatever on the car - so it's simply yours.
Beside this, I had a nightmare with SoCal customs who did not want to release the car without an EPA form, certifying that the truck is California legal. Took me 3 weeks to get this out of GM's back.
Taxes and custom fees did not imply since the truck was declared as "personal moving good with no commercial value".

Anybody has an idea how this works in CDN.

Thanks

I am sorry to burst your bubble...but, better to know the facts now, than to be stopped at the border...

Sorry, can't be done. Due to the "incomplete chassis code" in the vin.
Talk to Dean Higson for the details.

He had enough trouble importing his '89 TTA, and actually knows the Export/Import laws rather well.

Although, if you have a big bucket of cash to "accidentally" drop on the floor, well, they just may sign the paperwork and look the other way...

Dean had to pay through the teeth...Thank God he is a dentist,eh?

In this case anway, the tried IS THE IMPOSSIBLE.

Brought mine over the border about 6 months ago. Just trailered it across. Paid GST on it at the border, and I had 45 days to bring it up to spec. (ie daytime running lights etc), or it gets deported. Needed the title, bill of sale, and they just checked to see that the VIN on the window matched the one on the door.

I hear I got off easy, because you are supposed to notify customs 3 days in advance so the country the vehicle is leaving will know it's not registered there anymore. Which I never did.

So I think my truck is legally in Canada, but illegally out of the US. Then it's just the usual safety, e-test and go pick up your plates.

With the incomplete VIN #'s Importing a Syclone is no problem since it's a truck, but since a Typhoon is a "sport utlilty" vehicle, that's the problem (the gov't figures there can be interior mods that affect the crash-worthiness), so it has to be at least 15 years old to bring it across. I did alot of checking after talking to Dean and Tony since I'm bringing a Syclone across the border next month. :D

Check the RIV website for more info.

Yeah, what he said. Syclones okay, Typhoons not so much. :(

Hamilton, eh? Sorry about your luck...Oh, well, when you get tired of the pollution and high prices you can always move out west to Alberta :D

What exactly have you found out? From everything I have read ty's won't be allowed in for a few years.

Keep me posted, I may just have to sell the buick and buy a ty to make a set. :D

So far we got this

A recall clearance letter must be presented in order to pass
the federal inspection. Contact the original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) or
dealer for your vehicle to obtain the document, as well as
information on modifications costs.

AND:
Does anybody has a good phone # or contact to GM to get the ###§§$$ EPA form and that the car is equipped with an emission control (cat. converter...).

Thanks in advance

Both Deans and Barbs ty's were already in the country. We aren't sure how or why they were allowed in but we didn't wanna call and ask either

Nolan imported his ty a few years back and had some major problems. The RIV people sent him a letter telling him to get it out of the country in two weeks. After a zillion phone calls he stumbled across a nice person there who just "snuck" it through the system.

Sy's aren't a problem because they are trucks.

Keep us posted how it works out. I still need a 93 white/white. 8)

majestro11, just wondered how you made out getting the Ty into Canada. Are you and the truck still in Hamilton? If so we should get together. I brought mine into Canada over 7 years ago. I had to leave a copy of the owner ship with the US custums people for 72 hours to make sure there were no leans. After picking up the paper work on the US side I went into Canada custums. They sent me into abrokers office were I paid $210 to fill out the paper work. He had to check the vin on the truck and inside the door jam info. He then sent me back to the custums desk were I paid duty and gst on the Canadian value of the truck. I did have a time period to get the truck up to Canadian standards and checked by a local GM dealer. This was covered by the $210 brokers fees. I then had to get a safty check and pay pst. It sounds like things have changed since then. I have a 1990 GMC Z71 with 7500 original miles on it that I bought new. I plan on trading it for a Sy. I hope I don`t run into any trouble bringing the Sy across.

My Dad imported a Typhoon into Canada this year. Had it shipped and then did the same stuff we did with our syclone. Had no problems getting it into the country. If anyone has any questions as to how my Dad did it, let me know and we can get in contact. It was all legal as well.

I had read when I was looking into importing my Syclone, that if you are importing a vehicle for personal use and not to sell, and you're only staying here for a short time (dunno how long that can be) but then you are exporting the vehicle back to your original country, you can get by alot of the typical hassle.
