Calipers look burnt

last year I had gotten a new set of calipers for both sides as well as new rotors and Carbon metalic pads. This time around, I decided to go with cheaper pads as the carbon metallics have never lasted me more than 6 months. What a screw up, I got the cheap pads and can smell them almost everytime I stop. Pad wear was even but I noticed on both calipers, that the seal that goes around the piston was burnt. The caliipers themselves were red. The pad surfaces looked as if they had been on fire and were not very smooth. Rotors were red as well but surfaces were perfect and very turnable. When I compressed the pistons back, I could hear that seal crackling. It was kind wierd. FWIW, Ive never had a set of pads last more than 6 months. Any ideas on what may be going on here?

Couple things could be if your brakes are wearing prematurely, first is you have to realize these brakes are undersized to begin with, are your rear brakes out of adjustment or worn out?? This will cause all your stopping to be done by the front brakes and thus heat more than they should.
Did you get new calipers or remanufactured calipers, reman's can have there problems if not done right or sat on the shelf for a couple years, if the o-ring on the piston is burnt you would probably be having fluid leakage and like Mike said you could have a stuck piston. Depending on milage 6 months is extremely short time for brakes, as i've read you drive the truck pretty regularly and push it to it limits you should see 10K - 15k miles (guesstimate)

I could be wrong but I imagine that launching wouldnt affect them much being that they arent relly stopping oyu just holding you.

I probably could stand to adjust my rears but even last year I wold adjust the rears once a month and still had crappy wear. Its driving me nuts cause it has now ruined both of my front wheels and Im about to put on my Z06 wheels here shortly and dont want to ruin those too. I guess Ill replace everything again and keep track of what kind of milage I get. I do beat the crap otu of my truck but I beat the crap out of my Vette and they lasted a while. Well, actually, about the same. Ok Ok maybe its me then. :(

Do you drive with both feet?? Nothing wrong with it especially if your trying to keep the turbo spooling while braking, but it will smoke your brakes. If your going Z06 wheels do the brake uprade at the same time, even if you just do the fronts.

I cant stand when people 2 foot it. Ive never been one of those. I really cant afford the upgrade to be honest. Guess Im stuck with crap for now.

How do you boost launch then?? :rotf: Tranny brake??
Remember you can be the fastest in the world and have the coolest wheels but it dont mean nothing if you cant stop IMO, hope you get it fixed.

Well ofcourse I launch with two feet but I thought you meant normal driving.

Did you wirewheel the slide pins and put some Sil-Glide on them when you changed the pads? sounds like youve got some sticking.:2cents:

Wirewheel? I sprayed em down with brake cleaner and geased them. Maybe it is my driving. I drove around doing the speed limit all day today and didnt smell brakes once. Hmmm.

This is my answeralso. The caliper needs to be free on the pins. Double chack that the pad wear even on both pads. If not then we have the answer.

One other thing worth checking is brake pedal freeplay. With your hand, check that there is a small amount of pedal travel -before- it touches the master cyl. Very unlikely problem but easy to check. If there is no freeplay the brakes don't release right away. If really bad for some reason, 2 or 3 stops and the brakes are locked.
