C-Clip Eliminator Kit

Hey Guys,
From my old drag racing days I remember the GM 10-bolt rears needing a C-Clip eliminator kit to keep things in one piece. I did some searching thru the forums and can't find any recs on the topic.
Does anyone know if this is a necessary mod on our Sy's?? I want to do rear discs, and inspect the entire rear just to make sure it's alright, and thought this would be a good time to dig into it if needed.

Thanks,
Rob

IIRC, Ed Hess broke his and went to the eliminators afterwards. He's the only case I've heard of that happening in.

That was an interesting read on that thread, NOJIMMY.... very scary for Ed!

I'm kind of up in the air over it. I'm not making insane amounts of power, but, I'm still running just as fast of times as we did with our hot rods in the seventies and I know the guys used eliminator kits on those cars.

Sounds like the best thing is to get an 8.5 inch out of a zq8 stickshift truck, with the discs :D and then not worry about it any more.

Thanks for the info!

Note that there are lots of opinions about these vehicles, but in general...
-Ed ran VERY sticky tires, and did MASSIVE 4-tire burnouts (stressing driveline components heavily).
-Ed ran low 60 foot ETs, and while he didn't have a transbrake in his TH400, he did have
his own launching/rpm/boost "items" to launch hard
-Ed did not have C Calipers/disks so there was nothing to stop axles from coming out
-Many 10sec vehicles have run fast without doing anything to the diffs (but they
prefer to rely on spinning vs extreme traction to not break stuff). Some dont wear drag radials for instance.
-Roberts Sy launchs very straight/level without the drama, but he took the time
to study suspension, braking, and vehicle weight transfer for his hp build
-One could easily say that U-Joints breakage could cause driveshafts to "hurdle"
a vehicle if the front portion caught pavement - so everyone should have "loops"
or carbon fiber parts (tho propshafts or alum driveshafts still could use loops)
-and the rear posi/ring gear itself in the rear could be a weak link considering certain hp builds

Iffn ya have $15-20K in motor and $10K in tranny/TC it may not seem unreasonable
to spend $4k in diff/axles/brakes. And given those up upgrade to front coilovers
where only 35% of the power resides, examining the rear end where 65% of the
action is could make sense.

Then again some strips require "loops", C-clip eliminators, coolant recovery systems,
upgraded seat belts, helmets and such anyways.

Hey, that's cool Larry. You must have some gray hair like I have then :D I helped a guy that campaigned a '70 Duster in the Rocky Mtn region - it was called "FeatherDuster" and was the hardest leaving car I've ever seen in my life - ran A/SM with it.

Thanks for the info on the drivetrain mods. There really is so much to learn about the Sy's. Trying to get a handle on what the drivetrains can take, given their 4-wheel drive mode, is taking some studying. I'm coming to believe that getting rid of any drivetrain snatch/shudder is important in making the whole system reliable as a whole, and is probably more important than just throwing a bunch of high dollar parts at it.

My first upgrade has to be the Gilbert front shaft and a hoop on the rear. I'll probably just go with a rear disc setup and let that take the place of the C-clip eliminator kit.

As you know from drag racing... it's one small, documented step at a time!

Re: C-Clip Eliminator Kit

It might be a little difficult running c clip eliminators with disc brakes. The disc brake brackets are designed to bolt onto the housing ends, the same place the c clip eliminators bolt on. They usually don't go together very well. These trucks are running 28 spline axles, but the front takes some of the pressure off of the rear axles. That is the only reason these trucks are able to run the small 7.5 rear end and not break it every time.
