Ready to spray the last coat of primer.

After Easter dinner? The Sy needs resurrection...Jesus would understand.

Re: Bringing her back...

Since my wife informed me Jesus would not, in fact, understand, I had to wait until this morning to shoot the last coat of primer. Now to do chores while they dry and then sand them down one last time. Hopefully the 2 major repairs come out straight. Tomorrow I need to find a few more back to help me walk the bed back into the garage. Still a foot or more of snow and a few snowberms to have to walk through...

Re: Bringing her back...

I worked on the cladding until 2am this morning. It is done and ready to spray. I got the cab back in the booth and need to put the last coat of primer on it (and fix the bent corner of the hood). That should happen this next weekend. Getting there.

I am awesome. It took 3 months to do this...

Re: Bringing her back...

I set up the paint booth today and carried the bed and tailgate back in. After a month or two, I picked up some paint "pimpling" . Maybe due to the cover getting wet. I also had towet-sand the sealer due to a leaking seal on my gun. It is possible that it needed to be dried a little longer before putting down the paint. Either way, before bringing the rest of the truck into the garage, I decided to fix this.

I sanded it down, cleaned it up and am letting it dry overnight before touching up with a bit of primer. I have 3 days left of school this coming week and I plan on getting the truck on the road by the end of June. I have said that before, so no holding your breath.

I got a new tool for the shop, so I will be testing it out on my new injectors. It will be nice to know that they are all flowing the same amount!

Re: Bringing her back...

I was able to prime, sand and clean the bed and tailgate today. I need to replace the plastic sheeting I use for my "paint booth" as I was doing some sandblasting in there this winter. I don't need that debris floating around as I start painting.

While I was waiting for the primer to dry, I also started knocking down the primer on the cab and fenders. These were ready for paint, so it shouldn't take too much to have these ready to spray as well.

Re: Bringing her back...

In this pic I see primer on the windshield, and the weatherstrip has been cut away. The presumption is that you intend to replace the windshield after paintwork is completed.

I would suggest you remove the windshield prior to paint. There is often rust or significant rust on the pinch weld under the adhesive. Particularly if the windshield has been previously replaced. There is also the probability that the pinch weld will be scratched, and possibly your new paint will get damaged during the removal of the old glass. If rust develops under the new adhesive, it lifts it, and a leak develops.

Remove the windshield, clean up all old adhesive, and repair / re-prime the pinch weld as needed. Yes, masking off the opening with the interior still in the truck is a PITA. But better to address the unknown prior to final paint, than afterwords.

BTW, its good to see you posting again Kelly.

Thanks Dave. I has left it in to keep the snow load at bay, but I had been contemplating leaving it to make it easy. I will yank it out for all the good reasons you listed.

I spent another 6 hours working on the Syclone tonight. Tomorrow I have a couple of friends coming over to help me get everything cleaned up and the panels rechecked. I have an appointment this weekend with a quality paint booth, so I will be hustling. Good thing I am off for the summer starting tomorrow!

The hood is the only panel that needs real work. And a windshield removal tool is coming over tomorrow as well.

This is an awesome thread. All the time and effort is going to make this an awesome truck. Best of luck, keep up with the pictures.

Hopefully the last coat of primer needed for the hood! Got to love the land of the midnight sun! 11pm and still an hour of light left.

The Sy is sitting in the paint prep area, all the cladding, doors and hood ready for paint in the spray booth. Can't get the heat to maintain 70*. Either off and 58* or ~87* on (minimal burn time). The clearly obvious answer escape me. Tomorrow I will get a call in to the guy who knows such things...

Dave, I didn't have time to pull the window. (Although if I had the tool with me tonight
I would have done it while I screwed around with the booth). Tomorrow morning I might try to pull it, but I am simply out of time. I really feel like a hack after all the rest of the work, but I don't get another shot at the booth for quite a while. With that confession, here is a picture...

Re: Bringing her back...

Sometimes we have to make sacrifices to get things finished. It would be great to get that 100% mark but 98% just isn't that bad and it seems you have gone long enough without getting to drive it so get some paint on it and enjoy the reassembly. Keep us posted

We were able to get the booth fixed (burner was turned way up for winter use. It just needed to be turned down, but it took a call to the tech to figure it out. That and and a 14 hour delay.

I just for home from the 20 hour painting marathon. I did a little re-priming and sanding on a couple areas and whatever else I did that took almost a day. Has only two small runs in the paint, but I knocked those down before the primer. . I will wet-sand it and polish it up in the next week or so. $@!%€ there are a lot of pieces to paint. Also, I left the grille unpainted. I want to use a smaller paint gun to do a better job.

Re: Bringing her back...

I had to let this sit for a while until I had the motivation to attack it again. In the end, the last coat of clear went on rather dry and I had to remove quite a bit of clear to smooth it out. The first load of cladding, inside of doors and hood went great and turned out great, but the truck itself was a problem. A combination of no sleep, a very short window due to technical difficulties with the booth and a deadline kept me from sorting the problem and salvaging the clear. I was spraying SLOW, but there simply wasn't enough material coming out!

As I was borrowing a booth and needed to be out by 6:30 am, I had to leave it without finding the gun fault and without putting on a good, final coat of clear.

Today I was able to block it almost all down to 400. Tomorrow I will finish with 600 and get it back into the booth in the next week or two. This time the windshield will be out Dave!

Re: Bringing her back...

People that have never shot their own paint have NO idea of the pitfalls and ways things can screw up. Dry-spray sucks. Mostly because there isn't enough material to sand and "fix" it, and the only remedy is to put more paint on, basically paint it again. I'd rather have dry-spray than fish-eyes though.

The main reason I advocate getting the windshield out prior to final paint is because there is usually significant rust under the adhesive caused from the coatings being scratched during previous windshield replacement(s) that needs to be dealt with. Easier to fix before paint, than after. That's all.

Days are getting shorter again, keep at it!
