BOV sound?

I just got my Ty running again after a full motor and turbo rebuild, now I just took it for a short rid around the block and when I let off the gas or between shifts it sounds like I have a BOV on the truck when I do not, are they supposed to sound like that? I have a custom intake on it right now off the stock orange turbo elbow and no hood at the moment. I just want to make sure everything is ok before I mess something else up on it. It obviously only does it when the truck starts to really spool but I did not get on it to much due to it beinf just fired and started for the first time in months. I also have the Waller 57mm turbo upgrade on my stocker if that makes a difference? I am just asking because this is the first time I am driving it since I bought it with a bad motor and turbo. Thanks in advance guys!

Re: BOV sound?

Are you SURE you don't have some kind of BOV? I would check closer into that, though I am relatively new to the SYTY world myself, but at least I had my truck a week before I blew it up... It definitely had a BOV. Loud as hell. Freaks out any passengers.

I could be wrong here, but i thought that all turbocharged vehicles (or at least most) have some kind of BOV of sorts. Other than that, what would you do with all of that spooled up air pressure if you let off the gas? :dunno: In my thought process, there would need to be some sort of release or ???

Just my :2cents: , which is really all it's worth.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: BOV sound?

SyTy do not come with a BOV in stock form.

It could very well be the backwash through the turbo compressor when you snap the throttle closed.

Is it only when you let off the pedal suddenly or does it do it when you "creep" off the pedal?
the backwash gets much louder with a cold air kit since you remove the crossover tube and also having the hood off would lend well to the acoustics traveling much easier.

If you hear it when you are under boost then you've got a boost leak somewhere between the turbo and the TB.
All pretty common stuff just got to figure out which scenario you are chasing.

Re: BOV sound?

^^ x2

probably the compressor surge your hearing. you'll hear it wherever the air filter is. perfectly normal

BOV is a quick "sneeze", and compressor surge is a flutter.

Re: BOV sound?

Yeah it is more of a flutter than anything else. Only when it spools and then I let off the gas. It is really loud like I said because the hood is off and there is a CAI on it at the moment. I will try and get some pics for you tomorrow and see if that helps at all. Would it do that if I had the vacuum lines for the boost solenoid on backwards? Not sure if that is possible just wondering thanks again guys.

Re: BOV sound?

its louder if you have removed the stock air box and crossover tube to something else, its compressor surge, mine did it too. nothing wrong

SyTyless......for now!
Re: BOV sound?

Its normal, all thats happening is the pressurized air is hitting a wall (throttle blades), and going back the way it came. There is some dispute as to whether or not it's bad for the turbo, but it does sound cool.

Re: BOV sound?

So when I get my BOV installed will it take care of that? I am ok with it as long as it is not causing any issues thats all I care about.

Re: BOV sound?

I had an RFL on the truck and I really didn't like it. I just like the closed system and the compressor surge. Like you said the compressor surge is loud enough. I love the sure that a monster turbo makes. I did notice that half throttle with the BOV I can hear it venting. I dont really like that as well.

Re: BOV sound?

I have the HKS SSQV for it just need to get the flange welded and installed on the hard pipe between the upper IC and turbo and install it on there. I will try it and see if I like it and if not I will take it off.

Re: BOV sound?

a bov will make your turbo last longer, how much, dunno. but dont go for a loud one, try to find the quietest you can, cops can still hear you know:rotf:

^btw thats the one i have

Re: BOV sound?

I don't have a BOV and my truck makes the "flutter/surge" sound just like everyone else's when I suddenly let off the gas.

Listen to this video I took, it has CD-quality sound. When I let off you can hear it go "PFFFFTTTT"

Boost Launch Video (1.2MB WMV9, 640x480 44kHz sound)

Re: BOV sound?

mine surges for 5-6 seconds from 22psi, but the loud part is the turbo down-spooling. sounds like i'm dropping the a-bomb

Re: BOV sound?

Thanks Tooky thats the noise I was talking about. Just wanted to make sure I was not hurting her already! Also I read somewhere on here and I can not find it now, how to adjust your wastegate so you know how much boost you are running? Does anyone have a link to that or know where I saw it?
