BOV on stock Motor

I was thinkin of going to a hardpipe with a BOV. Just as overboost protection.

My question is, will it screw with any boost sensors, or make the computer read anything wrong??

or is it a straight bolt on with no tuning?

I'm probably gonna do it, i figure its cheap insurance.

Straight bolt in as long as you tap vacuum in the right place (Ie, not the MAP sensor line)

Re: BOV on stock Motor

should i bee leaning more towards an external wastegate for overboosting protection??

Re: BOV on stock Motor

A BOV DOES NOT CONTROL BOOST it simply vents boost to the atmosphere when the throttle body blades close. This is to prevent boost pressure from "back washing" through the compressor wheel slowing it down. If you are looking for over boost protection, you are looking for a pop off valve which opens at a preset boost threshold.

Re: BOV on stock Motor

Stock wastegate is too small and can't handle the higher flow of opened up exhaust or higher flowing cat/muffler in most cases and will cause overboost which can damage your engine if not delt with..

You need to yank your exhaust housing and send it out to jwaller to be ported to handle the extra flow or put an external wastegate on.. This of course assuming that you've already tried adjusting the wastegate as much as possible.

I used the ITS mini gate which is only 38mm I believe and it worked great for me although kind of pricey

I used one from a 2nd gen DSM. Got it for $25 at a junk yard.. Welded up my own hardpipe.. Worked like a champ.. But like Mike said it does not control or limit boost..

Re: BOV on stock Motor

hey brandon I would just wait until you get that cat back on your overboost should go away, and get rid of that boost controller you have and put the stock one back in.

Re: BOV on stock Motor

Question? Why are you worrying about overboosting? Is that the problem your having? The stock syclones have overboost protection. Once they read over 14.5 psi they cut out. (Correct me if I’m wrong anyone.) The best thing would be to get an aftermarket boost gauge to really watch your boost levels. I know that some guys use pop off valves or some thing like that for overboost protection. All the BOV valve is going to do is get you attention on the streets and prevent compressor surge. :)

That's exactly the problem though. Once you go over 14.7psi they cut out. Makes it kind of hard to floor it or go fast when it cuts out and the CEL comes on. I would wait until you get the catback like the other guy said or close your wastegate more.

Re: BOV on stock Motor

^^ Exactly. Again like Pat said, i'm gonna wait till i get my cat on, and the new exhaust, to see if that fixes it.

Pat, we'll get together in a month of so, and we can yank the boost controller outta there, and tweak the truck.

Thanks all.
