Boost Controller For Faster Spool

I was talking to one of my turbo dodge buddies about the syclone. I told him that Im starting to get all my problems cleared up with the sy. And that I should be ready to join him in the street drags at the Lacrosse Speedway. Here is a link if anyone is interested.
http://www.lacrossespeedway.com/sched.html

I told him that the sy is a pig from a role and it spools real slow. I told him that in order for me to run 14.7 psi I have the wastegate rod all the way lengthened. He was telling me that a boost controller would help me spool up faster. At first I was like wait a minute..... I have an ultimate chip Im installing that will do that for me. He was like it should not matter. For example you can set the boost controller for stock boost and its just used for a check valve. It wont let the waste gate vent until its reached 14psi or so. He said that should help me from a roll. I know the risk involved but I have a boost gauge installed so I can watch it carefully. Makes sense but I was wondering what you guys thought about it. This was the one he recommended.

If you have to length the wastegate rod all the way to have it reach stock boost no wonder why its slow to build boost. (Does it over boost if its shorter?) I think you might have some wastegate operation problems if that it true.

Re: Boost Controller For Faster Spool

I was having problems before but its like it cleared up all of a sudden this year. That was before I had a boost guage in. So its hard to say if it was overboost. Why am I reaching 15 psi with the wastegate rod all the way lengthened?

Normall the wastegate is close with a slight amout of tension (factory spec is 3/4 of the pin overlap or something like that). The actuator opens at 8-9 psi and then the ECM starts to bleed off boost(through the boost solenoid). So it should at the very least build boost quickly to 10-12 psi. If the wastegate is longer the factory spec its constant bleeding off boost, hence the slow building off boost.

I would start off by adjusting the wastegate to the proper spec, checking/replacing the vacuum lines, bypass the boost solenoid. It should make 8-9psi of boost (realtively quickly) but not anymore. If not its the actuator diaphram could be leaking or a sticky wastegate. If that work sitck the boost solenoid back in the system and see if that works.

So in other words it threads 3/4 of the way up on the wastegate rod threads?

Two years later...... Proper wastegate adjustement and a manual boost valve makes your truck spool like a supercharger!

Would you say that a manual boost valve is bester than an electronic unit? My Ty came w a greedy unit but a friend of mine swears that a manual valve would work alot better, he even gave me one.

I have adjusted the wastegate as instructed and it sure makes a differience..

Re: Boost Controller For Faster Spool

Im sure you understand the basics of a boost controller so this should make sense when I say this.
The manual valve will not let the wastegate open until it sees a certain amount of vacuum pressure. With the wastegate completely closed this makes the turbo spool as fast as it possibly can until target boost is reached. It’s not always a good idea on the stock turbo because the wastegates seems not be efficient enough to vent exhaust quickly enough to control boost. Now if you dont have this problem or have ported your wastegate you might get away with a manual valve.

The electronic controller will help spool faster but in most cases the electronic controller is not holding the wastegate all the way closed before you hit max boost. It’s constantly trying to anticipate/control boost. This makes for a slower spool. Electronic boost controllers are also a lot safer because they have boost cut and other safety features. The manual valve can not offer that.

I choose a manual valve and Im also confident and comfortable with it. Others are not.

Food for thought, I removed my manual boost controller when I bought my Ty. I had a check engine light that would come on when the Ty was cold. The stock boost controller had vacuum caps on them, is that normal? I have put it back to stock and have not had an engine light sinse. The Ty is a bit slower now, but I'd rather have slower now, then no go later. When installing a manaul boost control, do you completely bypass the stock electronic controller?

I have an ultimate chip in my truck. That chip deactivates a lot of the codes that are normally thrown like if I disconnected the EGR valve. I have not experienced any codes disconnecting the stock boost controller. Not to say a 100% stock truck wouldn’t. Yes you just put the manual valve in place of the stock boost controller. Your truck will be a different animal with a manual valve.

To all new members:
BE CAREFUL OF THE MANUAL VALVES. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT BOOST THEY ARE AT WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM. BACK THE VALVE OFF AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AND START FROM THERE. WORK YOUR WAY UP SLOWLY. YOU WILL BLOW SOMETHING UP IF YOU JUST TURN IT UP WITHOUT TESTING. DONT USE ONE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCURATE AFTERMARKET BOOST GAUGE. I DON’T WANT TO HEAR THAT ROOKIE SAID IT WAS OK AND NOW MY MOTOR IS BLOWN. YOU ARE INFORMED.

Re: Boost Controller For Faster Spool

I used a stiffer wastgate actuator to get quicker spool up.
I use an Ultimate chip also.

Re: Boost Controller For Faster Spool

Mine came hooked up. I adjusted it back and fourth when I first got it. I have a autometer gauges, boost, oil pressure for turbo, air/fuel. Since I removed the manual controller, I have fiqured out my fuel pressure (adjustable) and checked my timing. Its been retarded about 4 degrees. This is consistant to what the previous owner had said, it was running 18psi before he got it. Now that its running good, and have checked these parameters, I think I may reinstall the manual controller and play a bit.

Re: Boost Controller For Faster Spool

for 30 to 40 dollars you can get a pressure test kit so you know what psi the wastegate is set up at.

Connect it to the input to the wastegate and turn up the pressure. It will continue to build until it beats the pressure on the spring and then will bleed off. This will give you the most accurate spring rating.

You might have to plug another hole in the wastegate depending on what setup you have.

It was the first tool I bought two years ago wheh nI was having slow spool/overboost issues. Helps you verify vacuum leaks as well. Well worth it.

I wished mine spooled slower:lol: Compared to my GN which has a small upgraded turbo the syclone spools like a light switch.
