Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

Well first of all I just traded my truck for a 92 Ty (1167) and love it. It seems to have some mods (PT44E turbo, tial BOV,Pitbull chip, Walbro 255, ect...) havnt been to deep into yet, sorry. When I first drove it, it kept wanting to die at idle when warm. So i went ahead and put a AC cap and rotor, Ignition control unit, MSD 8.5 wires and a set of NGK ur5's. I idles fine now other than a little miss here and there. My problem now is when It gets up to 16psi it wants to spit and spudder until the boost drops down to 14 psi. I at first had the plugs gapped at .035 and then adjusted them to .032, but no difference. I looked at the old plugs(burnt up autolite 23s) and they were gapped at .025. I didnt notice a problem with the old plugs at that high of boost, but I only drove it once before I started changing everything. I do have a minor exhaust leak on pass side manifold that Im going to fix this weekend. Sorry guys im a newbie and have been trying to use the search button as much as possable. Thanks

broken driver side motor mount may be cutting your timing under heavy throttle
look for signs of alt cutting into hood liner

hope this helps

Invest in Datamaster. ;)

That way you can see what its doing. Or if someone is close to you.. (you didnt list a state, and its not under your join date and all that..) maybe they can help you out a little and take a look at it with a computer.

Motor mounts are good. From what I can tell it looks like stock injectors. You think I may be maxing out there duty cycle? It seemed to be ok before dealing with Ignition just didnt Idle well. Im real big into LS1s and LS2s so these 4.3 turbos are all too new to me. Thanks guys and keep it coming!

sounds like fueling issues . the pitbull chip u have isn't calibrated to support fueling needs after the stock 15 psi levels, and without an custom chip and three bar map sensor it does no good to try to run over 15 psi of boost .

Is there a certain chip I should buy, or do I just need a custom one?

Re: Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

you should buy a 3 bar map sensor, adj FP reg. and a chip for your build. get datamaster while your on it for datalogging, you might get away with an ultimate chip, and most of the vendors have some basic programs for your build.

I've ran 18 to 19 psi for two years without a problem on the pitbull chip.. then again that was when I had a stock turbo and you have a pte 44 so id assum that you were reaching the limits of the stock injectors as I am also :)

I'd also suggest investing into Datamaster to see exactly how bad it is and without a doubt upgrade to a 3bar map and supporting chip.. The only off the shelf 3bar chip really is Phil Long's and the Ultimate.. other then them you'll have to go custom.

Warning! Until you can data log it and find the problem for sure, if you keep boosting it, it will die an "explosive" death pretty quickly if the tune is out and or it's going lean under boost. Get DM, Tuner Pro and find the trouble before you do anything else. You need an accurate fuel pressure test guage and a timing light also.

Re: Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

I need to check the timing and fuel pressure. What pressure and degree of timing do these trucks like? I've already had a LS1 blow on me because of a MAF failure under 12psi, no fun and not cheap. This truck only has 15K miles on crate engine and I want to keep it together still!

Re: Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

The only thing im wondering is that as I recall It didn't seem to bogg until after I changed the ignition, even with the shity plugs. Like I said it just wouldnt idle and would die when warm. I dunno!

New plugs and wires can be bad. It happens more than most people think.

Re: Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

I think I good on the plugs and wires. Last night I pull the pass. side manifold off to fix the leak and now have another problem. I put everything back to gether and took it for a spin and It seems to me to be building too much boost too quickly. As soon as I get on the gas a little it hits 17psi right away. It never got past 16 psi before and it took a little longer in the rpm range to get there. There is a vacuum line that goes from the turbo manifold to the wastegate with some sort of valve(2 wire harness plugs in it) with one inlet port and two exports. Only has one vacuum line to it on the side with two ports(goes to the wastegate). Where does the other port supposed to go? Plug it maybe? I pulled it back in lastnight and the check engine light came on, so Ive gotta check that out tonight. Only had the truck a week and Its a pain already, lol. Good thing its not a daily

the un-used port is the vent, dont plug it up.

Wow is that true? My motor mount is BUSTED. I cant launch from more than - 5lbs boost. Even coming near 0 its REALLY hittin the hose. And I cant build more than 4-5 lbs while driving normally. That would explain it. No one offered up that solution to the problem before. Time to order some motor mounts!

Re: Bogging down at 16psi (Im a newbie)

So it a vent, makes since. Could I have hooked the line up to the wrong port? The end that there are two ports, which one should it be hooked up to? The one that is inline to the opp. end or the port that sits to the side of it? Right now its on the top one. Thanks guys for you help!!!!
