Better door handle/lock solution?

Is there a better way to do the door handle/lock assembly to prevent break in?
I saw a thread where later generation GM door handle and lock assemblies were installed. Is that the best way?
While at Toys-R-Us with my son, came out to see, in the back of a parking lot, a blue ford van sitting right next to the Ty. As we walked to the Ty, the van backed out and drove off. No tags. The passenger waved at me. They left me with a little present. They had chiseled with a hammer and screwdriver(it looks like it) around the bottom of the lock cylinder on the passenger side and F'd up the door.
Before you say, I'd have chased their ass down, remember, I had my 6 year old son with me. That kinda changes your behavior a little bit.
It might be interesting to note that this is the 2nd time that the SAME door has been damaged by punks using the same technique while visiting the Dayton Mall area.

that sucks.

What about no locks at all, just handles and double locking soleniods with the keyless entry? At least its one less option for douche bags who like to mess with people stuff.

Nice, dude I'd quite driving that thing to the mall no doubt. If not you gotta put a ghost kill switch on er.

What would it take to rig up about a dozen 1 Farad caps to the chasis?
Then you could come back to an unharmed truck and a pair of smokin' shoes.;)

Even better (and less likely to involve a lawsuit) if your truck is anything like mine, along with others I'm sure, just take the PROM out of the computer when you get out since the comp is laying in the pass. floorboard anyway.

ECM=Glovebox :)
It sits in the garage all the time now. When I take the little one to stuff, I take the family van and mommy drives the Ty to work where the lot is patrolled and has cameras everywhere.
I still need to fix the damage and make it not as tempting to break in anymore. No handles would defenitely make them either break the window out or walk on.

Glad to see ya back Blake, sorry to hear about your Ty. Im am always so nervous when i leave my ty in a parking lot, my soon to be wife hates it cause I park way in the back and try to get in and out of the store as quick as I can.

Hey, Eric! If you park up front, you get hit with shopping carts. You park in the back, scumbags feel secure enough to break in.

I found this, does this look like the right way to do it?

Any pics of the ECM in the glovebox. I've pulled the wires, but I have to cut some of the box away to make everything fit so I can close the door! Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Better door handle/lock solution?

Not sure what you mean. I'll take pics though. All I did was remove the little "door" in the back of the glovebox and then took a hacksaw and enlarged the opening towards the passenger side a little bit. I had to disconnect the little drac module that was bolted to it because it's wires were not long enough.
I need to secure it better. Either with velcro or a couple brackets like servando did.
Are you kidding me?
So no handles, no strip time? That's not gonna work. At least I hadn't ordered the pop lock kit yet. They have buttons that go on the outside as a backup in case you lose your remote, do you think that would fly?

Re: Better door handle/lock solution?

Is it a new rule for 2006? I just went through the 2005 rulebook and I can't find anything on door handles or locks.
I found it.
Here:
4. Doors handles must be functional, inside & out. “Shaved” door handles not permitted unless there is an obvious mechanical means for our safety crew to open the driver and front passenger doors from the outside.
It's from here:

It might be worth it to swap out doors for the racetrack.

why not just buy a nice cover, its easy to spot someone cutting off a car cover with a knife .

Re: Better door handle/lock solution?

Well one thing you can do is just shave the lock cylinder and leave the handles, the lock cylinder is where they gain easy access, not easy with just the handle there, and its still a clean look, and you still have the keyless entry to keep it locked up.

Im going to do this to my Ty i think, that way its one less way for them to break into it and i can still race at the track. The no handles no racing has been on the books for a long time. And the ovious way to open the door for the safty crew is a hole in the glass or lexan where they can reach the inside handle, that has to be red for easy visibility.

2nd gen door handles arent anymore secure than our stock handls IMO.

I wonder if you could run a window net at the track and be ok, leaving window down?

Hi George-

Good to see you are keeping well. Welcome back!

I like the idea of shaved lock cylinders alot. To respond to your concern of broken glass, clear window tint is a way to combat this.

I put clear tint on my ty. Clear (90%) was used to protect the interior from UV damage. I didnt want to go dark because it wouldnt match the rest of the OEM glass; nobody could guarantee an exact match. Clear tint is used by various divisions of city emergency vehicles (police, fire, etc) to protect from glass implosions.

I'm sure the thief(s) would still make some damage, but it would be less. Who knows, the fact that the window didnt implode could cause the perp to walk away.

Just some food for thought.
