belt squeal

Hi,

Sometimes when I accelerate, I can hear my belt squealing. What's causing this? I just replaced the belt a week ago and it's still doing it. The previous belt was pretty shredded. Could it be the motor mounts?

Thanks,
Alex

Possibly the belt tensioner has gone south.
Usually whenever you here a belt squeal, it is due to lack of tension.

Thanks for the reply, is there a spec for how much tension the belt needs? Is it straightforward to replace the tensioner?

Thanks,
Alex

While I had the belt off I would take and spin the accesory pulleys and listen for a bad bearing, and check for play by trying to rock the pulley and see if it has slop, it may be that one of the accesories pulleys is not keeping up with the engine rpm,
ps, power steering fluid is not low is it?

I am getting an intermittent squeal from my Typhoon now for some reason... It happens when you first start it and it goes sueal-squeal-squeal and then stops. Three times, every time, and it's very loud and medium-pitched.

When I am just cruising on the highway, it does the same thing every mile or two... squeak-squeak-squeak a little faster then stops.

I have full power-steering fluid. How can I tell if the tensioner is bad? It has tension on the belt....

Also, the belt is pretty far towards the engine on the waterpump. Is it supposed to be in the middle, or towards the back a little bit? I think my harmonic balancer might be slipped/bad. My timing is still waaaaay off from where either of the marks are.

check how cracked the rubber is on it, also make sure the power steering pump pulley is flush with the shaft. It dosent take much at all to make squeak.

If the tensioner pulley has "facets" (flat spots) worn on it, that is a dead give away that the pulley is shot. Replaced mine a few years ago when it exhibited the fore mentioned features...

may just be time for a new belt.. apply some belt dressing or a small amount of dishwasher soap to the belt and see if it goes away.
