Battery shut off not killing truck

Hi all, i recently picked up a battery relocation kit from Sean Lauver, to relocate my battery and eliminate the stock plastic crossover pipe as mine was cracked, i need to have a battery shut off that kills the vehicle so i don't get hassled at the track, so i picked up a

four pole unit from Talor and wired it in as the showed http://www.taylorvertex.com/PDFS/1033_Switch_Instructions.pdf i still can not get the vehicle to shut down, i tried searching but am not coming up with anything is there something i am missing or need to hook up further

Thanks for the advice
Matt

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

uplug your alt and try it again. your truck is probably running off the alt once you hit your "kill" switch

I tried disconnecting the alternator cable output to the disconnect switch but i get nothing at all, no lights, won't crank etc, i have not tried unplugging the weather pack connector to the alternator i will give this a try tomorrow

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

Thanks Dave , i connected it the second way you suggested with the alternator and battery to the same side as the jumper and alternator orange wires to the small post starts fine and now kills the truck when it is shut off

Thanks again

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

you def do not want to make a practice of unplugging alt when running, def on the newer vehicles.I mean are you trying to turn the switch off when the truck is running to make it stall? You should just be able to put it between the top post bat connector and the bat and it shoud work.Unless you need it to shut right off for nhra etc.

I need it to kill the truck, NHRA rules require it

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

The alternator has a "field" wire (I think a small gauge brown wire) that must be switched off at the same time as the battery.
There are switches that have 4 posts on them 2 small ones for the field wire to switch off and 2 large ones for the battery. When you switch off the "field" wire and the battery the truck will shut down.
NHRA requires a switch that does not have plastic parts including the switch handle. You must have a safety switch anytime you relocate the battery (from the engine compartment anyway).
Also you will need 12v constant (fused) to your ECU for when you cut the truck off with the safety switch if you have a stock computer or it will be like taking out the ECM fuses (the computer looses its memory and any codes it has stored).

I did this for a friend's truck but it has been a while and I am unsure which wire exactly is the field but I think it is the brown wire if my memory doesn't fail me.

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

I have done this and it works. I has just been so long I cannot remember which wire I tapped into to cut it. I found out the hard way. We wired in a single switch cutting just the battery. And the truck Just did not shut off (just as he describes). Then after a little research I found that interrupting the one one cuts off the alt. power and the truck shuts off. To add to this the guys truck I put the safety switch on runs a stock ECU. So when the truck was shut off via the safety switch the ECU lost power. On restart it would run very rough and we figured it was the memory loss of the ECU when the power was cut. This would really suck if you were at the track and someone cut your power off. So I ran a fused circuit to the ECU. You can cut off the truck with the safety switch turn it right back on if you want and it never skips a beat.

Re: Battery shut off not killing truck

We need a sticky about wiring in a battery shutoff switch and possibly a diagram to help future members that are going to do this, just my :2cents:

Ok then. I guess Pink/Blk it is. I told you it had been a while since I did it and without looking at the truck itself I couldn't remember...:dizzy:
