basic engine Q ... hydro lifters swap ?

just recognized my engine makes some noise :squint:

it's ticking when fireing it up, goes away after let's say 2 seconds - when engine under load the ticking noise is back - seems to get more quiet the warmer the oil is but never goes fully away :( (btw.: passenger side)

... if i got a crack in the header it would sound all the time , right ??

any other opinions on cause - hydraulic lifters, maybe ?

if so, what will happen ( valve not opening , etc.? ) if not swapped ASAP ??

is it possible to change the lifters only by taking the valvecovers off, or must the heads be removed ??

hope for ya help, guys

TIA,pat.

Re: basic engine Q ... hydro lifters swap ?

could be it's a leak from a header making that sound, otherwise, you have to pull the lowerintake to replace the lifters.
you can try to adjust the rockers firts?

but if it's from the headers, wouldn't the sound stay the same (the sound i'm talking about changes w/ the engine temp) ??

did no adjustment yet ... how was that tighten till no play and then 1/2 turn or what was it ??

TIA,pat.

edit : if it's the lifters , what will happen when i ignore em  ??

well, if you have a crack, the heat from combustion will have an influence on the sound, so it might be that when your headers are hot, the crack will be almost closed.
if it's a lifter, than you might have a chance it will collapse, but that again. try to adjust them wile the engine is running and see if it goes away.
i still have a loud rocker, but it seem to be getting better everyday, it might be that after all the crap that run to my engine the lifter has a hard time filling itself, but like i said, it gets better every day.

Gotta pull the intake to get to the lifters.

Rod bearings is an ugly possibility. Does your oil pressure stay steady?
Also, partially bent rod could be contacting the block. Both of these are consistent with the loading thing.

Mine had a slight cold tick to it for 12 years... kinda went away when warm, though.

hey dig, thx for reply !!

oil press is rock solid ... perfoming not too bad ;)

the "funny" thing is, when driving faster than 60km/h it's kinda gone (pass window down, driving near a wall) ... ??

... rod bearings ...
... bent rod ...

with that in mind, pulling the intake another time seems to be an "nice" option ...

... oh gawd, engine's about 20K mls and bone stock :hang:

The exhaust leak is another option, but that typically sounds different. Engine related noise has a definite "metallic" sound to it.

Get a PC mic for your laptop, and record the sound... post the WAV file.
