So there I was......

About 18k miles ago I had my front diff go out in my truck and fixed it. Then I had 17's in the front and 18's in the rear sized matched for diameter. since I never went lock to lock on turning because the wheels were to big, I never saw the total symptoms of bad VC. When I rebuilt the front diff, I put stock wheels on it but it still seems that it didnt like to turn when wheel was turned lock to lock and I had my suspicions.

I drove the truck on stock wheels for a long time but wore the front tires out on the insides and outsides and thought it might be an alignment still in the back of my mind thinking the VC is probably almost toast.

I got the truck painted and put the 18's on the front and rear with good tires. Since I still had the problem with the large wheels I wouldnt go lock to lock at all, thus nobody drove my truck.

Well today I was making a U turn on a three lane road and as I am finishing the turn and powering out. BAMM!! and no power! truck is running sounds good oil pressure good but not moving forward and its just rolling to the side of the road..

Looking on the road there was a piece of the front yoke for the TC on the ground but both drive shafts are still in. The front prop shaft is actually a gilbert so the next weakest point would be the yoke and then tranny fluid starts to run down the side.

So tomorrow I get into tearing into it.

What concerns me is that even with the truck in park I could push it. That makes me think that TC locked up and is no longer connected to the transmission and that there is damage to the side of the pan I cant see because of my stature of my truck.

What is the best place to get parts for the TC for a rebuild or does anybody have one that is in good condition with a good VC?

if you have no front prop you have no park, dont worry

If its in park and still can push it, then the chain in the transfer case broke. It may have cracked the case and thats why it was bleeding on the ground. my .02

my front prop shaft was installed and still is.. Just extended onto the transmission cross member from what I could see. So that is a good thing.

What i am wondering is why did the the yoke break on the front of the transfercase?

At this point it doesnt really matter whats wrong with it. If I am going to pull it all out, then I will rebuild it or replace it. truck has 143k on it.

Any advise where I can get parts for this if the TC in not cracked?

Update,

Finally got around to pulling the TC and found that the prop shaft broke at the U joint and cut some wires and bent the cable bracket along with smacking the side of the transmission and causing the transmission to leak.

When I did the VC test, I found the VC was locked up and wouldnt even move a bit.

So question is, can the transmission be fixed where the propshaft removed a chuck of it showing the corner bolts threads?

also looking for new prop shaft and tranny pan.

I'm leaning towards the D&R propshaft. The guy's name is Jack, 768 Chicago Drive, Jenison, MI 49428, telephone number (616) 667-1308. Last I spoke with him they were $300 shipped. They appear to be high quality and reasonably priced requiring no modifications to the truck -direct bolt on.

1) You can find parts for the transfer case here. Never used them and it was the first Google search result.
2) Post pictures of the damage to the transmission. Chances are you will need a new case. You may be able to buy a new case and swap the parts over.
3) Pull the front diff to make sure nothing broke in there either.

Thanks for the info,

My tranny had no problems with it before and was rebuilt 30k ago is what angers me about this.

But as long as I keep everything clean and make sure to take pictures and my time with the tranny for the valve body area and am not removing any of the clutch packs and such, doing just a parts swap be ok?

Doesn't look as bad as I thought, you may be able to find a shop to tig weld up that area, drill and tap the hole and go from there. Probably need a new tranny pan.

I found a case for 150 and they would swap the guts for 200.. Thinking that might be the way to go since welding it might be more of a nightmare than just swapping. I dont really want to spend 160 on a tranny pan though..

If your going to swap the guts you might as rebuild the transmission while your at it.

I would love to do that but I do not have the money to do it. Looking at a Torque converter as that was giving me issues before, propshaft, tranny and tranny pan and a transfer case rebuild. My tranny does not have a lot of miles on it as it is and there was no problems with it before this.
