Auto shifting or manual ?

I just read on a corvete forum that manual shifting 700r4 while racing is better! Pete ( so called trans guru) wrote that manual shifting bring on more cluches and ingauges the sprag for more holding power.
I know that George Blake wrote that manual shifting 700r4 while racing will damage it.

Who is correct here???

I can tell you that manual shifting does engage more parts to hold things in place than just letting it operate on its own. I had mine set up to shift manually and my tgans temps never got over 160 and were usually in the 120's. Driving it around in od was resulting in temps right around 200 , even with a big external cooler and a fan.

Benefits of driving around the 700r4 with manual shifting are what? Lower temps and better shifting? Does this increase wear on the trans driving it in manual?

It's an "automatic". It does shit for you. You aren't better running the slushbox than the valvebody is. Want to shift gears? By a damn manual (and even then, I only know of one truck on here running a stick).

Driving an auto like a manual is for bro's and toolboxes.

Cooler temps mean that there is less slipping going on inside the trans

While I am far from a racer and not a transmission guru I would think from a common sense stand point that manually controlling something that is designed to run without operator input is going to lead to problems.

120 is too cold anyway, the fluids and components are designed to run around 170-190 ideally. Besides, if you are running 120 degree temps, that means you have bypassed the factory cooler in the radiator, which isn't the best thing to do, since the factory cooler is far better at removing excess heat from transmission fluid than standalone coolers are when the fluid actually gets hot.

I'm not sure I understand the benefits of trying to manually shift. Is the thinking that it would be easier on the trans? That would be fine and dandy, but what about the engine? I can't speak for everyone but I've noticed that the first shift comes real quick when you're giving it the beans so to speak, I'm busy enough watching gauges and keeping the Damn thing pointed where I want it to go. I'll pass on the chance of missing a shift and seeing if the rev limiter works. Keep drinking Jimmy, 24 hrs. in the day.

My fastest times were run while leaving it in the od 4th position. My mph required it since still using the stock cam. Conv locked also! Not sure if this helps keep trans together? Never any transmission issues. Mildly built transmission $300 in parts rebuild! I also did this well into the 11s repeatedly with stock transmission up to convertor failure trashed it.
