ATR Header Surgery (pics)

So Iactually made some progress! (for all you haters in the crowd) For those not following my re-rebuild, I'm mounting my turbo further away from the motor for clearance from the radiator, and just to be different. This requires some header mods to make it work. I bought the atr headers that were frankensteined onto the TyStang in FL, so I feel no sorrow for hacking them up more.

I got the drivers/easier side mocked up/done today. I'll still need to cut it apart to add a vband clamp to it, but wanted toget the main xover done today.

front view. i think it wraps around quite nicely

closeup of my, ahem, great welds. Who wants to buy me a tig for xmas? I'd never welded stainless before...so i had to buy some tri-mix. Sure smells funny w/ the helium in it.

Clearance of the xover on the drivers side...looks good to me.

Now for the harder part....joining up the two headers into the t3 flange. Should be fun, not sure what exactly i'm going to do yet.
IMG_1902.jpg

Back view of what i'm dealing with for joining the headers/xover. I'm gonna need a tight bend off of the passenger manifold to it doesn't interfere with the turbo compressor outlet.
IMG_1903.jpg

My only clearance issue right now is the xover coming close to the water pump outlet.
IMG_1899.jpg

This really isn't an issue though, becuase once put my vband clamp on the drivers side, i'll be able to easily tweak this away from the water pump before welding the rest of the header pieces up

So thats what i did this morning :) Now Its time to go do some non-car shit. yay. So how does one go about testing for leaks - I'm sure my welds aren't 100% sealed, and I'd lke to ensure they are before dropping the motor back in. Suggestions?

looking pretty good. why didnt u use stainles? i love the turbo bracket . that bracket will save those headers of not cracking. im going to build some headers soon.

Re: ATR Header Surgery (pics)

you may be able to cap the unwelded ends off w/ some home depot rubber endcaps from the plumbing section.
You could mount the header flange side to a 2x4 w/ an inner tube as a gasket.
Use a leakdown gauge to test for leaks.
you may haveto weld a bung for the gauge though.
Just a quick thought.

Tubing donuts are your friend

They arent cheap but you should only need one so the hit on the wallet shouldnt be too bad. Just be prepared to wait if they dont have the size you want in stock (only the co that owns the patent makes em so back orders happen). FWIW Ive done business with The Chassis Shop for a few years now and every time I call I get nothing but good service.

BTW, are you using a MIG? What filler wire are you using? Are you back purging with Argon?

Millermatic 175 mig, .30 stainless filler, tri-mix gas - i think its like 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, 2.5% CO2 or soemthin like that. Not cheap either...20lb tank (had to buy the tank + gas) was $80.

so THATS what those donuts are for. I always wondered what the hell people used them for. I might have a different plan for it, so i might not need quite as tight of a bend as i'd thought.

Thats what I use em for since they arent all that tasty IMO....even with beer theyre a little rough on the taste buds.

Did you ever finish the lumpy headers?

Theyre about 75% done....I ran into a snag trying to fit the turbo and keep the AC. Im working on that and have some ideas but just need to find time/motivation to get back on it(trans control issues and wrecking have kinda got in the way...along with a ton of non syty crap).

Ive got all the materials I need except for the 3.5" mandrel bends for the DP....a 5" DP just wasnt gonna fit without frame cutting/notching so the idea for a 5 incher was scrapped.

I'll get it done....someday

5" DP  That would've been awsome  Wonder how that would affect performance, aren't you running a 60 series turbo Dave?

The 5 incher was for the GT42 but it turns out that the actual turbine outlet is only 3.5" so I didnt need the mondo size DP anyways....not to mention it wouldnt fit unless I cut a hole in the hood and did it tractor pull style :rotf: .

Or you could have gotten one of renz's "through the hood" turbo brackets

Re: ATR Header Surgery (pics)

so what exactly do I need for my mig to be able to weld stainless?

Re: ATR Header Surgery (pics)

Wire and gas. My welder recommends straight CO-2 for welding stainless though, not sure why Mike is unsing Tri-mix

which is basically why i'm asking, why can't I just use argon?

Re: ATR Header Surgery (pics)

the guys at the weld shop said argon would make the welds dirtier, with more black grit. My welder says trimix in it for stainless, so thats what i went with. When i asked at the shop, they just said "yea" as if thats the way to go.
