ATR Downpipe W/ External Wastegate ?'s

Hey guys,

I have ATR Headers with the 3" ATR Downpipe with External Wastegate. Just before they closed up i got a 10lb spring from them and put it into the wastegate. We still are havinga problem controlling the boost pressure. It creeps up to 15lbs and sometimes 16-18lb's with no pressure on the spring. The turbo i have is PTE- GT35R ball bearing. Is this wastegate to small or is there something else anyone knows that may keep me from controlling the boost levels. I have a Greddy Pro-Spec B boost controller but i can't even get the wastegate to work properly so i doubt the controller will help me right now.

Thanks Ralph

Get rid of the ATR wastegate and go with a TIAL or a HKS gate....ATR gates are garbage....I don't know one person that has had 100% success with the ATR gate....and they have been known for overboosting...

Hey Tim,

Does the Tial or HKS bolt right on or do i need to have the pipe cut and have new inlet and outlet pipes installed. The truck is putting out over 600 hp @ 15 psi but it creeps. Should i get a new downpipe with a new design to the wastegate.

Any suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks Ralph

The stock ATR wastgate needs to be modified so it actually works. This is what I came up with in searching:

I had the valve shoulder machined down so it was only half as tall as before. We then ported the heck out of the inside to allow the valve to fully open. If
you look, as sold it will only open 2/3 of the way. With the mods we did we
have FULL opening.

McCoy's did mine and I have rock solid boost control.

Hopefully someone here can help you better.

Hey Jimmy,

Thanks for that information! Appreciate it

If you want run either a TiAL or a HKS you will need to cut the inlet/outlet flange and weld on new ones to fit the gate you want to use. There are small differences in all of them. I have ATR headers w/ATR downpipe, and my flanges have been modified to accept a 40mm HKS gate. I wouldn't try to convince someone that the HKS is a "good" product, though. I already replaced it once after the valve corroded so bad it kept sticking in the sleeve. Trying to run low boost with your setup is going to take a large gate. With my 40mm HKS, I can't run any lower than 15psi, even with an 8lb spring. Above 16psi, though, it is rock solid with my Blitz SBC id3.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply i was having good control with the pte-44 and 54 but as soon as we put on the ball bearing it seam to be totally different in control and that makes sense. So i will either have my exhaust guys weld that up or i will try to port it out some and see if that works first.

Thanks Again any info is good info!

when u say " no pressure on the spring" do you mean you dont have any vacuum lines going to it? Run a single manifold source line to the side of the wg, and see what base boost it makes.. eliminate the profec and leave the top wg port open to atmosphere.. It it still makes too much boost, then its the wg.

The ATR wastegates have just as much trouble as the profec boost controlers so i would like into a complere new boost control system if you want trouble free consistant results.

Hey Mike,

Its finally running on the engine dyno we ran no tension on the spring with top open to atmosphere and it was peaking at 15-16 lbs @ 5800rpm with a 10lb spring. On the truck its doing the same thing with the greddy system off. Would it help if i ported out the downpipe so more volume of air can enter the wastegate path. I do have a guy around the corner from me building a nasty syclone and i might go ask him about, he has built a few low 8's turbo mustangs. I was also looking at your downpipes just seems even if change the wastegate will another unit fit my config, or will i need to change it and have it rewelded.

Thanks Ralph

come to think of it the ATR only has a single port doesnt it? so what i said previously probbaly doesnt apply.

Mike,

It has two sides with ports, we ran the compressor to the side port and it stopped creepping @ 16lbs of boost on a 10 lb spring. one port on top and one on side.

Do you think if i port the downpipe where it enters for the wastegate and make it bigger will that help it control it any better, or i would just like to install a new one but different like HKS, Greddy, or Tial but do any of them fit directly as a replacement. I think all need new piping and different flanges if i remember correctly.

If you know of one that fits left me know thanks Ralph

TiAL 38mm bolts to the ATR downpipe without modification.

If your interested we might be offering a group buy on all TiAL products. Check the Detroit Turbo forum for details to be posted soon.

Re: ATR Downpipe W/ External Wastegate ?'s

well i just looked at the ATR gate.. there is a port on the side, and i believe they usually put a plug in the top port. The allen on the top where it says increase/decrease will only preload the spring and give you +/- 2-3lbs base boost. I believe how they recommend hooking up the boost control is to vent the line going to the side of the gate.. I would imagine the correct way to do it is to put a single uninterupted line going to the side, and the more manifold pressure that is applied to the top vacuum port the more boost it should make. I dont think porting will help you any, it sounds like the valve and or diaphram is sticking and not allowing the gate to open all the way.. you can always pull it and bench test it with compressed air, or just replace the wastegate.

Who makes the KB waste gate?

I know Kenne Bell didn't make them.

I bought a generic tial 38mm off ebay w/ a 6lb spring and it bolted right up.

I've always heard the ATR one was bad unless you did port work on it.

Bolted right up to what Atr down pipe that had a atr gate on it before?

I bougt the ATR DP a while back and it didn't come w/ the WG. The WG I ordered off ebay bolted right up to the hole on the ATR DP with no problem. basically a direct replacement
