ASAP Starter help

The Syclone is going down to Carlisle Thursday morning. I just changed the starter on this about 3 weeks ago, brand new. I have the same problem I did before: clicks when i hit the key, just like a deadspot. Between work and 8,000 other things going on, don't really have time to dig into it. Anything that would give me a deadspot *click* besides the starter?

Re: ASAP Starter help

Just pulled it off the charger yesterday. Can't find any fuses blown either. Need to get it running to pull it up into the garage and on the trailer thirsday.

Re: ASAP Starter help

Search "Purple wire fix". Very common problem. Does not take very long to fix with a relay from the parts store and costs only a few bucks.

Zack I can come up early Thursday with a power probe and we will sort it out if you haven't by then. I'm meeting you and Tom at your place Thursday morning.

Re: ASAP Starter help

Yip, problem is we fixed the purple wire issue a while ago. It's my dad's built Syclone. Also, went to pull it out of the garage. Truck was cold. Ran it last night, that was all. And Matt, I believe he put an external soleniod on the truck a few years back, but unfortunately we never got around to discussing the fine details about what the problems were or what could be after we found out he had mesothelioma. I'm pretty sure he has an external, but not 100% confident. This was only the 5th attempt to start it since I put the new starter in. Still makes the click like a dead spot.

Re: ASAP Starter help

well to eliminate starter as a problem put truck in park turn key to start , then crall under the truck with a screwdriver and touch the power to the switched purple wire connection at starter ! if it cranks or starts its not the starter , BUT BE VERRY VERRY carful doing this have someone sit in the truck with foot on brake and if you jack it up use a jack stand! and also be aware the truck should start so BE CAREFUL! any questions CALL ME ZACK ok 716-257-5299 Gary

Re: ASAP Starter help

Did you test how the battery reacts when you hit the key?

Put a voltmeter on the battery and have someone turn the key.
The battery can show 12+ volts sitting there but once you put a load on it?
That'll plummet.

Just went through exactly that with my dune buggy.
Went to 3V when the key was turned and came right back up to 12.6 the moment load was removed.

Dead cell, dead battery.

Re: ASAP Starter help

Don't have a volt meter, but the battery is fine. It was like a dead spot in the starter I pulled out. After rocking it back and fourth in gear a few times between each click, it would crank, like the starter was bad. Now I still get the click, even after rocking it and pushing it down the ramp of the garage... Nothing. Still clicks. Just looked, and it turns out my dad didn't put an external solenoid in. All connections and terminals tight... Faulty new starter? That's one of the only things I havent tested yet.

Get the remote solenoid as stated. Its like $15 at Autozone... Ford mustang one will work. Had same issue with my old sy and that fixed it
