Anyone done a 6 speed conversion?

Ive done a search and came up with nothing.

Has anyone done a 6 speed conversion on a Syclone or Typhoon? Rebuilding automatics gets old quick. I have a thing about shifting gears as well.

Thanks

James

If you keep getting your auto rebuilt and rebuilt than they are doing it wrong . A couple here can build it right 1st time .

Yea the best thing to do is if you are on the east coast contact jwaller is his screen name and he will do you right but if you are on the west coast contact mike lee at (www.raceprovenmotors.com) and he does awesome work or you could alway go with the 4l80e swap that jeff scott and erue are offering

Re: Anyone done a 6 speed conversion?

I think there is a 6 speed syclone in japan also, so that would make 2. If you are only asking because you cant get a auto to last, you are getting your trans build by the wrong person. Mike Lee, John Waller, George Blake, Brian Hartman, and Carl Rossler are some of the people that can build 700R4s, and if you are running 9s or 10s then you should look into the 4L80e from JS/Turbotime.

I will have the entire 6 speed sy's driveline at my shop this coming week and will disect it and get mesasurements on all the components and do a writeup for anyone who is interested in the swap.

From what I've heard for years, manual trans's aren't the way to go w Turbo cars. Something about the drop in RPM when U shift, losing boost.

that depends on the ratio of the gear box.

You do lose your launch though, and I'm guessing that's why the one that Waller knows has a supercharger - to make up for lag off the line.

I realize I can spend some major dough and get a strong 700R4, but for that kind of money Id rather be shifting gears :)

Details Details? Were you able to keep the 4wd? Which trans did you use. They dont really build a real strong 5 speed unless you spend big dollars. I would be interested to hear about your setup though.

its a 5 speed from a regular 1990 4x4 2dr blazer. these 5 speeds are stronger than any stock 700r4, and i only payed 30 bucks for it, so if it goes ill just get another one. i do have 4x4. i tried bolting the awd transfercase from my ty but i couldnt. so i had the blazer 4x4 transfercase regeared with the ty transfercase gears so when its in 4x4 its the same gear ratio as the awd, and i also can put it in 2wd or 4x4 low. have the flywheel from the blazer and a centerforce clutch and throwout bearing. the clutch pedal is out of the blazer as well. bolts right up under the dash. no welding!! everything looks like it was meant to be there. i like it. 2wd is fun and 4x4 means business.

Re: Anyone done a 6 speed conversion?

My sister has a 6 speed Audi TT. You would really have to abuse it (drop the clutch at 5000 rpm to launch it, and only half let off the gas if at all to shift it) to make it faster then an auto. When you drive it normal there is lag in every gear. I'm not saying this because I like autos, in fact I pretty much hate them to the point that I doubt I will ever own another one, but they do work good with turbos.

If you have lag between gears put a blow off valve on it and the turbo will stay *spooled*

I'm fairly sure it has one, but i could be wrong.

Yeah, a BoV will help keep the turbo from spinning down during shifts... Fact is, boost builds under load.. when the clutch goes in, there's no more load.

Re: Anyone done a 6 speed conversion?

There was an AWD hot rod in Summit's catallog like 3 issues away that used a modified Sy's drive line and a 6 gearbox. It had a few good pics of the transfer case and front suspension.
