Another coolant recovery tank install

Today began like many other days that some of you may or may not be familiar with; looking at the truck and thinking "everything is running pretty good, so what can I work on?"

I decided to remove the windshield washer tank because I never use it and I thought it would clean up the driver's fender well a little more. After removal, I noticed that there was lots of room over there (I have removed my ABS, cruise, and remote oil filter), so I thought "why not move the coolant tank over to the driver's side to clean up the passenger side a little?".

A couple of hours later, I had a selection of three tanks that were procured from pick and pull, and all were off of Japanese vehicles.

The winner is on the far right in the photo. That tank is from a 1978 Toyota Corolla.

After a little drilling of the bracket:

The bracket was installed in its new home, one of the old studs that used to hold the ABS or something on:

The tank was kind of discolored. I could have just bought a new one, but that would not have been the Cowboy way. I thought to myself "self, why don't you do something cool like Harmon would do, and just paint the tank black?". I know what a lot of you are thinking right now, "you idiot, how are you going to verify the coolant level if the tank is painted black?". Well, after much thought, I decided that I would simply remove the tank lid to check the coolant level: problem solved.

Here is a pic of the final install.

I even managed to score a cool tank cap. I think this adds some "far east mystique" to the truck. Some people pay good money to have Asian symbols installed on their bodies, but I got it on my truck for free. Yes, Ken, I know the lettering is upside down, but as we all know, life is full of compromises.

Is this your bush?
Re: Another coolant recovery tank install

It's creative and I like it....I made a custom bracket for mine to be put on the driverside. ...if I get out to the garage to install the disconnect knob for the battery I'll shoot a pic for you.....I like the black look though....good call!

Stealth tank. Can't even see it in the two bottom photos. Another thought I had on knowing the level would be to mask off a narrow vertical section and leave it "tank color."

Nice work!

Re: Another coolant recovery tank install

Does the cap have a long pipe going to the bottom of the tank to be able to suck fluid back in when the engine cools? I didn't see it. If it's a purpose made coolant tank then I'm sure it's there.

Lol @ "it's running good, what can I fix" -maybe one day I'll know that feeling! :D

Nice idea Randy. We have used the late '90s BMW coolant bottle (found on 5, 7 & 8 Series IIRC) on some of our race cars and off road vehicles. It's small, black, plastic, cheap, includes a float indicator, and has a 2 wire low coolant sensor that can easily be wired to a bulb. Here's an eBay pic (that's the sensor on the very bottom).

Yes it does have the pipe on the cap, and I hope you can know the feeling, Mark.
