Another BS3 install

Code what?
I have taken on my second BS3 installation on a friends Typhoon with vortecs/cam, BB67. This truck has already ran mid 11's I believe. The current chip just does not allow for fine tuning, as the goal is a 10sec reliable daily driver. I would like to include my progress in this thread with general steps regarding installation of the standalone harness. After installation a dyno tune session is going to dial in the 10sec potential. Will post up pics shortly

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I'm doing the holley swap today and have the old wiring out on a stockish truck. Did you pull the harness out and then separate the wires and connectors that need to go back in?

It's ok, I'm not sure as I've never installed a Holley system. I start by removing the entire harness from fuse bulkhead to ECM. You end up with this

At this point a remove all the loom and start separating wires to discard or keep into the modified stock harness. The engine harness from the BS3 will not be integrated into the stock harness. It's been a while sense I've completed the install on my Ty so there may be a few wires shared. I'll touch on that as I get there. I'll be working on this truck pretty heavily this week and should make some good progress. Good luck with the Holley

Thanks. That's the exact same pile that I'm working with right now. I think it's basically the same process as the holley has a new engine harness of its own.

Ended today after finding some unexpected water under the passenger carpet. In the process of drying that out and will find the source of the leak before I mount the BS3 ECU in the glovebox. Removing the seats takes 10 extra minutes and is much rewarded by having the room to lay down comfortably upside down under the dash to do any kind of work. I ended with this today after removing the stock harness. Lots of cleaning and organizing to get done tomorrow while the carpet is still drying.

Carpet almost done drying, while waiting I cleaned up or more less removed unused wiring under the dash. Example is the cruise control harness and module, this opens up a lot of room to work in there and access the fuse panel. It also allows a large hole to run wires through in the firewall. I did not take a before pic as it was too bad but not the worst I've seen.

This is a good example of how messy crowded wiring causes a dirty engine compartment. With most wiring removed prior to reinstall it will get a good cleaning and be able to stay clean afterwards.

Doing some cleaning and will post a after pic of the progress. Next will be the mounting of the BS3 harness and ECU.

Here is the separated section of the factory harness I will be reusing. I'll describe in this picture from top to bottom the circuits.
e109441e07235a59efa50d8fd804e0c8.jpg

Wiper motor/ 4 wire, white, grey, orange, purple

Engine ground/ 1 wire, black

Coil/ 1 wire, pink to grey coil connector, white wire out. This was cut for MSD so grey connector is not shown.

Starter/ 1 wire, Purple wire previously cut above brake booster.

Power bulkhead on firewall, 2 wire, red

Alternator plug/ 2 wire, pink/blk, brown

TCC/ 2 wire, purple, tan/black

Coolant temp cluster/ 1 wire, green

VSS/ 2 wire twisted, green/blk, purple/white

Oil pressure sensor/ 3 wire, tan, orange, grey. Orange and grey will require to be cut at the shared connection. I accidentally cut the tan at this step completely separating the pig tail from the rest of the harness.

What we have left is 3 wires cut about 4-5" from the bulkhead connector. I will explain uses for these later.

Purple-Tan/black-pink/black, the solid tan is my mistake on the oil pressure pig tail.

Next I'll show how these group of wires are joined in beautiful harmony

Do not discard this as we will separate the AC harness for those running AC.

C101 will also be removed and I'll show what it is reused for.

Engine ground/ 1 wire, black
Ground TO engine for most grounds in the instrument panel. Lighter, radio, light switch, ash tray light, glove box light, tone generator, turn sig flasher, cluster and lighting, etc. It is not grounding the engine, it is grounding the stuff inside TO the engine which is grounded to the battery.

To clarify this is the one usually by the t-stat correct? ive been meaning to ask about it for my own swap purposes. thanks

Thank you Dave, your extra information is always intriguing. Although I was just simply identifying circuits left by description. As Dave said, there are many different ways to do this, this is just how I do it and what has worked for me.

Now to catch up on this install, I have found by trimming away more rear glove compartment will allow the ECU to fit. This I'm happy with as it allows the harness to bend comfortably out the rear of the glove compartment.

I have finished my stock harness and it's quite simple. I do not have any loose pictures as it's already in the truck for test fit. This will very depending on application, I will post a couple finished pictures after adding some split loom and securing it in place.

ECU power harness, fuel pump and electric fans are the few things left to do.

Re: Another BS3 install

Very nice write up so far.. I can add one thing to this. I ran into a problem in my truck after the big suff was installed the fuel pump keep running even with the key off. Turns out the oil pressure senders are pinned differently internally. The hot side of the oil pressure sender battery + feed (orange wire) was shorted to Fuel pump wire (Gray wire) So the fuel pump was on even with the relay on the fire wall unplugged and the key in off position.
Turns out the senders are different inside between a Syclone And Typhoon .
I would imagine you would have the same issue even if you had the stock ecu in the truck.
So make sure if your swapping engines from a Sy to a TY or vise versa you dont swap the oil pressure stem and sensor.

I'm using a racetronix harness and relay so I do not use the oil pressure sender circuits for the fuel pump. I'm waiting on some new battery cables for this project, I've got a few more things to do. Should be back on it Thursday-Saturday.

Wired the fuel pump besides the last connection to the grey wire at the driver side floor board on a Ty. This wire is the activation for the relay using the BS3 and racetronix harness/relay.

Remove this from the pump side of the racetronix harness.

Just to update and add to the wiring for the fuel pump. The factory is set up to activate the fuel pump relay with 12v. The BS3 is ground controled. The picture of wires to the racetronix relay I posted does not show the black ground wire going up towards the front with the power wire from the alternator. I run it up to the driver outside frame rail and into the cab under the carpet next to the driver seat. It is now 12v ignition at the fuse panel. The grey wire which runs back through the cab is now the ground side controlled by BS3. Sorry I probably made this more confusing than it really is.

Here is where I'm at trying to get the truck started I've had a problem with the base tune sent in the BS3 ECU not being correct, firing order, ect. In the process of figuring this out I drained the PC680 battery and after a charge it's not doing so good. After getting some help with my lack of computer Skills I've figured out how to get my tune for the truck from email to ECU. After the battery is replaced the tuning will begin. Denny provided me a good start up tune for 75's a while back which I thank him for greatly.

Here is how it looks minus the A2A piping and alky tank/pump
