You will NOT find them new, they been discontinued for many years now. The do just slip right on and replace the steel ones.

Re: aluminum brake drums

For the typhoon you need to modify the backing plate or the drum... I learned the hard way... They slide right on the Syclone...

I have aluminum drums on my Ty and you do have to change the back spacing and use a small spacer to make them not rub against the back plate.

If you read the mailing list stuff, Ivan posted about how to modify the Ty backing plate to make it work.

edit: or are you saying you had to do that in addition to removing that dust shield?

OK.. here is the final update on aluminum brake drums for SyTys.... They
fit Syclones but not Typhoons... BUT you can make them fit a Ty.... you
will need to modify the backing plate on the Ty... Typhoons have an extra
dust shield on them... its spot welded to the backing plate... pop that
off and the drums will work perfectly... I would assume that you could use
a chisel to remove the dust shield but haven't done it so I cant tell you
how well that would work... you would need to be careful to not bend the
backing plate.... I dont believe that you can buy the aluminum drums new
from a parts store (probably from a dealer for a LOT of money) so your only
real resource would be a junk yard... I asked for aluminum drums for an 88
Camaro and they were able to cross that over to other cars that have
aluminum drums that will work... I think the ones I got came off a 96
Caprice but I am not sure.... So good luck on your quest for aluminum
drums... I paid 30 bux each....
