Alky install

Don W.

Stab it and steer it
Shortly, maybe as early as this coming weekend, I'm installing Razor's alky kit. Just curious as to how long folks have taken to do this project. ABS delete installed, Taylor wires installed and a new (stock style) dist going in. Alky will be the last thing.

Also does it help to do the initial tune on a dyno or the 1/4 mile?

Re: Alky install

I'm also curious. I should be installing mine quite shortly also. Looks like a heck of a job. Hope your install goes well Don. Maybe I'll get to see you at the track more this season than last.

Re: Alky install

If you can let me know how it goes. Pics would be nice. I will be doing one in late feb. Also would like to know how much it would help my 1/4 times too. I hope that it would get me into the 12's.

12's are what I'm looking for also. Almost there last year. 13.0-something. I'm hoping to make it a weekend project. In other words have it done in two days. We'll see.

Wed night racing starts Mar 1st. I should be there with all the pieces in place.

Yes, I hear alky is great on stock or highly modded trucks. Jeremy got his alky set up real nice, I'm diggin' his pump location (behind pass. side front bumper). He has some great pics of that stuff. He posted them on the last thread I started if you guys want to take a look.

Re: Alky install

It's all in the boost and timing you can run.
Without tuning, the answer is no....with tuning, it's definitely a great upgrade.
(I am sure Razor could add way more to this than I ever could)

I run alky on my wrx and have had excellent success, but only after tuning on a UTEC (piggyback).
First run after install with a base map was ugly...so I upped my boost 2-3psi, pulled out a boatload fuel and increased timing across the board and wham! Serious gains...(with no knock)
Lot's of tuning after that, but from my point of view, it's the best bang for the buck upgarde.

Re: Alky install

the only thing I know is doing a search will get you a lot of info or at least it should theres been plenty of posts about. I was told by many that it is possibly one of the greatest things you can do to a syty sdtock or built. just look around.

Re: Alky install

The alky should take you about 8 to 10 working hours to install correctly....a couple of days, 4 to 5 hours a day.....That's taking into consideration your soldering time and stashing all the components in the right place....solder and heatshrink everything....Your engine depends on this kit....Take your time to figure out where you want the LED's before you get started...Keep your two alky LED's side by side if possible (low-alky and pump-on)....A great place to drill for the LED's is above the hvac controls in the syty bezel....I did that on one truck....on the other, I put the LED's in the headlight switch panel at the top where the ty's have the rear wiper and defrost switches ....There are 2 black boxes in this kit that mount inside of the cab....The largest one (pac) contains an access panel and two adjustments under the panel that you will likely need to adjust in the near future for your particular alky needs....the other black box is the gain/purge box....mount the PAC box where you can remove the access panel and physically see what you're adjusting when need be....use some 3M double sided tape to keep the mounting simple....I mounted both of them side by side under the steering column above where your legs go....The biggest PIA in the stock intercooler alky install for me was drilling the hole into our A2W intercooler for the nozzle....Not to mention the intercooler is really thick and curved where you need it to be thin and straight...I had a hard time making a seat/bung for that nozzle to correctly sit in....The correct tools will make all of the difference in the world on that one......If I had it to do again on a stock intercooler truck, I would use two 1" diameter thin washers in conjunction with the supplied rubberized washers to help seal the nozzle in our rubber/silicone coupler for the IC to throttle body......I've installed Razor's alky kit on two trucks so far and I think the truck runs better with the nozzle mounted at 6 o'clock rather than on top of the inlet to the throttle body....on my stock truck I mounted the nozzle on top..... it seemed to me that after I would floor it from a stoplight then stop at the next light, the residual alky (left in the lines), gets sucked down and your truck may stumble for a moment while at idle.....On my other truck where i mounted the nozzle at the bottom, I don't seem to have that problem where the alky just pours in when the pump is off...hope you understand what i mean....Also, you should consider mounting the tank on the driver's side where your abs used to be....It's well worth it and no big deal to do....good luck Don and thanks for helping me with my last motor ordeal......

would an alky kit be worth it in a stock sy?

I accomplished 15lbs.max boost before knock on a stock sy on 93 and no alky and as much as 26lb zero knock boost spikes with the alky...It can make a night and day difference, but you have to play around with it for a while....Having a wideband o2 sensor certainly helps...Also an ultimate chip would be nice so you can select leaner/richer or low to high timing programs to see which one works best for you......If you don't have a wideband, you could tune off of a properly functioning knock sensor and DM....I ran 11's last night at my local track on 93 and not much alky...But that's not my stock truck ;) .....major potential power gains for sure....

Re: Alky install

I finally got my Razor alky setup running a few days ago. Had it all plumbed up months ago, but never got around to using it. Been messing with it for the past few days and playing with the adjustments. One thing you learn quickly with these alky injection systems is that "too much" alky is not a good thing. You'll know right away if you're spraying too much if the motor sputters or bogs when you get on it. The WBO2 will show you how much richer the alky is making your AFR. The adjustments on the Razor system are definitely more sensitive than the old SMC setup I had. Right now, the Sy is running so well on 91 without alky that I haven't found a need to turn on the spray. I've got basically no knock below 15psi so I'm going to adjust the spray to come on at higher boost levels - less expensive that way for a daily driver.

From experience, the alky injection won't cure part-throttle knock situations, but over a long WOT pull, your IA temps will come WAY down and KR should be very low or nonexistent. For example, when I had the stock turbo/wastegate, I would get up to 8 degrees KR, even at part throttle acceleration. After I put the SMC kit on, I would still knock right when stabbing the gas, but after a few seconds of WOT, I could just watch the IA temps drop and the KR settle to ~1 degree in Datamaster and stay there. The stuff definitely works

I also situated the nozzle in the bottom of the RPM A2A pipe with the M15 nozzle pointed up. This makes for a clean install with the nozzle out of sight, plus you won't have alky dribbling down out of the line after you quit spraying. My only complaint about the system would have to be the low-alky sending unit is too sensitive and flickers with the tank less than 1/2 full. I ended up just disconnecting the low-alky LED altogether. Another issue I had was the turn-on/spray active LED was dimly lit with the system armed and not spraying no matter what I did with the adjustments. Don sent me a resistor to put between the PAC grey wire and ground and that solved the problem.

One more thing - when I pulled my upper and lower intakes off at 71K original miles, the plenum and runners were spotless. I mean, there was absolutely no carbon buildup, varnish, or anything in there. The alky will wash all that stuff off your intake tract...another plus.

haha....I need to ask around or just see what surfaces ....Just two nights ago, a vid of me smoking our local fastest street stang finally popped up (street races not track)....That race was around a month and a half ago!!! The guy that filmed it must have uploaded it to incorrectly using putfile.com because all we get is audio....Once we get all of this sorted and figured out, I'll put them in the vids section.... We also have vid of Bruce (syclone2960) burning up our local track running low 11's....You could say our locals know EXACTLY what a syclone is now....I'm pretty sure mine was the first one in this city....
