Alky Install wiring problem

trying to install my alky kit today, its the snow performance stage 1 kit.. First off yes i been trying to use the intructions on the site, but being the kit was not complete i had to buy wiring components on my own..

My situation is the relay, i have what it seems the same relay needed for the kit, but the colors coming out of the relay socket are different colors then what are shown on the instructions.

-I have green wire from brain box going to 12+ source and the box is also grounded.

-Off the relay socket this is how i currently have it, the pump turns on as soon as power gets to the relay, it DOES NOT turn on by the vac source like its supposed to which is what im trying to trouble shoot

Connections off relay socket goes as below currently
-RED to 12+ source
-YELLOW to Alky pump
-WHITE to red wire on brain box
-BLACK is grounded

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

Where or what is your trigger wire, you know the one comming from the boost pressure switch?

It seems you have two 12v source and none from the pressure switch for a trigger.

If you have the right relay this should be it

85- ground - black
86 = red 12V from pressure switch (12v from ignition to pressure switch)
87 - Green - to pump and to led
(led ground on the other side)
30 - yellow +12V battery fuse

Or just use a standard releay

One more thing, the relay harness you have, the black wire looping from 85 to 86, this should have a diode. If you don't then don't use this relay.

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

thank you for the reply denny

im lost on the pressure switch part, im wondering if thats my problem. I have a manual boost controller now and do not use the stock plug in one. also i do not have a led to tell me when its on, is that something i can pick up down at the parts store?

i got it to a point where if i give the green wire off the brain box power, the relay clicks and the pump turns on. but no matter what i do, i can not get the relay and pump to go threw the vac line from the brain box... Also im pretty sure there is no diode unless there is one in the relay itself?

You can use any 12v led

Your brain box have a vaccum line?
Then its probably not a stage 1, if it have a vaccum line the there must be a pressure switch in there.

post the model number or a pic so you can get the correct instruction.

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

I have one of this somewhere, I can't find it, I am using an AEM controller now.

This is a simple wiring, you don't really need a relay but you could add one if like.

Connect a Vaccum line from the intake (pressure switch built in) into the unit

Red positive from ignition (say wiper fuse)
You can use a relay here with +12 from battery and some iginition switch to turn on when Key on.
The pump use only 10 or 15 amp I still think you don't need a relay.

Black ground
Green to pump +
Ground the pump somewhere.

This is all you need for it to work.
It dosen't have a test button, so you cant see it turn on unless you get into boost.
you can rig a bicycle pump or compressor to pump 10-15psi into the controller.

LED - tap into the Green for + , ground the led anywhere.

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

Ok got it all together, went and drove it..

The alky seems to only turn on about 4psi and won't stay on, I have the full psi setting at 25psi. If I can hold the boost around 4psi I can get it to stay on.

Also I installed the Efans, grounded to fender and power wire running to the fuse panel, extra ignition spot. The fans turn on and work great, but when I turn the truck off, the truck still stumbles for a few seconds then finally dies out. If I unplug the fans, it won't do the stumble.

It sounds like you have no relay. That you turn the key on, and the fan runs. When you turn the key off, the fan is running, and the motor acts like a little generator while it winds down, back-feeding the ignition circuit, hence why it keeps running for a bit. The ignition switch, wiring, and bulkhead connector are not designed to handle the loads of the fans. You're going to burn something up with this configuration.

Don't wire your fans this way!

Use a Relay. Get the power (term 30) from the B+ stud on the back of the alternator. Ground the fan to the rear of the alternator case. Put the wire from your IGN fuse tap to term 86, ground term 85, and connect the fan (+) to term 87.

Thanks Dave! :D I had a similar problem on my old sonoma and never figured out why it did that after a motor swap and installing Efans. I'll get a relay on there tonight. I really appreciate the help!

And suggestions on the alky? I have a light installed to tell me when the pump is on, I can just the pump and it runs just fine. It's just when I hit boost it will not stay on, seems to only come on at the start psi setting.

thank you soooo much on this!!:tup::tup::tup::tup:
finally got out here and got a relay installed exactly how you explained.. tuned the truck on and to start, ran it for a few min, shut it off and it shuts instantly off.. thank you again so much davep your my hero :p:p:p

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

Good. Glad to help.

Now that it's working, there's one more consideration. If you used a standatd Bosch 30/40A relay, these relays are short-lived when used for high current applications like radiator fans. I saw THREE guys working on their cooling fan relays at Nats. None of these 3 trucks are driven very frequently, but the 8-12 hour drive to Nats did in their fan relays. Something to keep in mind.

Carry a spare.

i actually have about 6 of them laying around from the old days w/ air compressors for the air suspention. all 40amp relays so ill keep a few in case. thanks again though, i really appriciate your help

Re: Alky Install wiring problem

so weathers nice, been driving the ty a bit.. ive found out when i go over 20psi of boost "with gauge and dm reading same", the alky pump shuts off. i have my boost set to around that 20-21psi so this is a little problem. Now i just took my shop air compressor airline, regulated to 20psi, 22psi, then 25psi and everytime the pump stayed running and on like it was supposed to.. Now why would the pump shut off at 20ish psi when wot runs, but turns on when trucks off, and air is manually shot into the brain box of the alky?? by some chance does the brain box need a check valve for the brain box or...?
