ABS Help

Hi all i need help with my brakes. I searched through many brake threads but could not find any with this symptom. After replacing the abs bulb ( funny the last owner had a Tech 1 code reader but forgot to mention the bulb was missing, he must have forgot  ) i found as soon as i get to 12-15mph the abs light comes on and goes off when the speed drops below again and the abs does not work at all. I have bled the blakes many times but nothing. The brake pedal feels a bit soft and if i drive a bit hard the discs get red hot and the pads stink (new stock discs and pads)and start to fade well befor they should even for stock brakes. I dont think this has anything to do with the abs but thought i should mention it. I still need to pull the codes but was wondering if the symptoms sound familiar to anyone. :(

But on the up side my cruise works great(Just trying to make myself feel better)

Re: ABS Help

Not sure about the pad problem, but there are wheel speed sensors on both front wheels which I believe are used as inputs to the ABS control system (look for a cable coming from the dust shield right next to the rotor). Maybe one of these has gone bad, lost a connection, or come loose, and so the car is doing funky stuff during certain speeds? I'd think it would have to be either the sensors, or the ABS controller, since your light only comes on at a narrow speed range.

If the ABS is fused, maybe you can yank the ABS fuse and see if the other problems still happen (and if they don't, that should let you get around without hosing your brake pads until this is resolved.)

Take the unit off and replace it or just remove it(abs delete) before that unit completely fails on you when driving.

Re: ABS Help

When you bled the brakes did you bleed at the ABS unit? It could be the pressure switch not reading correctly due to air in the ABS unit. you need 2 special tools to properly bleed the ABS unit.

From your soft pedel I would bleed the ABS unit at least twice before replacing any parts.

Re: ABS Help

Well i did what DaveP said and reset the brake switch and took it out for a test and no warning lights came on and my ABS works at last. I was that happy i was nearly nice to the wife.
As for the soft pedal i think it might be the master cylinder seals?
If it was air in the ABS mod would the abs still work because its fine at the moment?
When you brake as it goes through the soft part there sounds like an whoosh of air?

Thanks for all the help:tup:
