ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

I thought ABS was an option that was GOOD?! I just spent an hour researching why people delete it off their trucks. Mine works fine....and I didnt want to delete it , but I may have to when I go ls1 rear brakes and atr headers.

Is it just for "space saving" or do they break alot? I heard a few complaints on the performance of the ABS but it feels like the one in my Camaro as far as that goes :) ---

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

I dont like anything that has ABS. I think its mostly personal preference. If you want it and it works keep it. Mine didnt work on my TY. It takes up a butt load of room and is ugly. That was my motive.

HAHAH thanks, I can use ATR headers and just grind the tabs down on my ls1 rear discs if I want to keep it , right? --

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

Mine had already failed, but before it failed mine didn't work all that well. From a panic stop when my speed reach below 10mph, it seemed to take an inordinate time to slow down. It felt like I was better off with out it. Maybe it was just mine getting ready to fail. I kept mine uplugged electrically, but with the ABS still in my system for a copuple of years. My last straw was a local Ty who ABS had already failed, but still still connect that had a complete brake failure and he rearended someone at 10mph. I think he may have had an O-ring dailure in the his ABS sysytems, I found a couple other isolated case, that was enough to convince me. I may rebuild my ABS someday but what I did wasn't irreversible.

I ditch it on everything I own, it's proven to INCREASE stopping distances, and is the reason I put my 01 6speed WS6 into a ditch. one wheel was on the gravel and the other three were on pavement, bitch kept right on rollin straight into the ditch. bought a 1 ton 96 GMC 6.5 T/D (turbo GMC #2 baby! )and after owning it 2 weeks I was sick of it. unloaded the rear jumps on rough roads, and abs kicks in and you just keep on rollin, 2 weeks and almost rear ended 3 people... bye bye focker. it's pretty hilly here and the roads suck about as bad as detroit.
If you can drive (which most people sadly these days can't) it's nothing but an accident waiting to happen. if you can't drive, it will at least give you some semblance of control so you can somewhat manuver around whatever it is your about to hit, but hope you have an extra 50 ft due to the extra time it'll take to stop.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

If it's working, BIG if, which I gather they don't much on out trucks, it is IMHO great. I've "activated" it twice in my '86 Bimmer and on one of those occasions I think it saved a kid on a bike. Never know for sure of course. FYI the one on my Sy is removed.

It worked great on my Corvette. I took one sweeping corner way too fast and one side of it was dirt and someone was backing out of their driveway.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

Mine activates all the time in the snow....I guess the only thing I dont really like is it seems to activate TOO EASILY. I am not expecting lockup, but it happens anyway, lol ... probably the rear drums playing with me since I am not used to drums ?! ---

It sucks ass on my 93 Ty. Once you hit ice or gravel, its almost like you lose your brakes. Mine is coming off soon!

New models of ABS work much better than the 1st gen crap they put on the Sy/Ty's.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

I deleted it on my sy. HUGE difference in pedal feel and how much boost I could hold off the line. Cleaned up under the hood too. I pulled it off the ty also along with cruise and AC. Its much nicer under the hood, I used braided stainless lines on it too which helps.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

Mine almost got myself and my family in an accident. Snowy road. Lots of traffic. Going about 10 mph. Pushed on the brake pedal. Truck slows down almost stopped. Just before stopping(just rolling), ABS kicks in, pedal goes to the floor. Truck takes off. I had to run it into a curb to keep from hitting the cars in front of me. The sy, ty, and sonoma GT WAS in the recall for malfunctioning Kelsey Hayes ABS systems, then they were pulled from the recall, then the whole recall kinda disappeared. I remember it being on the news. Dont' see syclone or typhoon hardly in the news and it stood out. I've never had any weird incidents like that since disabling it. It was one of the first systems of it's kind (being 4 wheel abs) and it just didn't work right. I'm sure the systems are better now considering it's been 15 or 16 years.

How do brakes lock up? I never really understood that. Is it because you push the brakes when hitting something like ice and the tires stop spinning and begin to slide? If you let off the brakes don't the wheels begin to spin again and then you can reapply the brakes?

You got it. The ABS is just a mechanical way of good ol fashioned know how in braking. Basically if the ABS sensor feel the tires starting to slide/lock up they start to pulse. In my opinion they don't do as good as a human touch in knowing when to pump the brakes and how much pressure to apply. But then again that's just my opinion. Some people like them and some don't. As you can see from the above posts. So, bottom line is if you don't like the way they feel take it off.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

One of the big advantages of ABS is its ability to manuever through corners or avoidance vs modulating the gas. Its even difficult for professionals to do with non ABS brakes compare to a good ABS system.

My ass. Look at it.
Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

How about this question...

By removing the ABS system, do you damage the value of the truck?

I would think that its kind of a toss up, since the majority of Sy/Ty owners agree that the ABS is junk, but try explaining that to some Joe who doesnt own one.

Re: ABS Delete....WHY?! ---

Are there any ways of retrofitting abs like systems onto older vehicles? I've seen some systems like www.thebrakeman.com under products but they took out the link because there was some patent problems....

When I was buying my Sy, I put additional value with truck with a functioning ABS. I remember reading about people saying they were failing & junk, but I was too hard headed to listen to them. I will probably attempt rebuilding my ABS someday.
