a question on boost...

this last week i started doing some WOT runs in my ty since i got 1,500 miles on my new motor. here's the question. when i drop the throttle to the floor it spools up real fast to 17psi and then drops down to around 12 and just stays there, i kinda also here a small amount of pinging. it seems that my truck pulls harder at half throttle then full throttle. and before you ask im reading the amount of boost off my autometer gauge, and its got the stock chip in it. thanks.

1) Get Datamaster and start really logging and learning what is really going on.

2) If you are hearing pinging TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS, I REPEAT, TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS!!! At that point you are approximately 1 to 2 seconds away from doing serious damage. Detonation can occur without you actually hearing it, but if you are hearing it then that is even worse.

3) The reason your truck may feel faster at part throttle is because the A/F Ratio is correct and your making good clean power, but then at higher boost levels you are way Rich or way Lean which is bad. Lean is really bad. Rich is safer but its also not the safest.

4) Stock chip and 2 bar map sensor do not see boost over 14.7PSI so if I'm not mistaken it throws a bunch of fuel at the motor and retards timing if it notices an overboost situation. One of the Chip guys can give you a more accurate explanation. But my advice is to adjust that wastegate rod until you only get 14-15PSI at WOT just to be safe.

5) Things to check in addition. Stock fuel pumps are getting old, check the fuel filter, cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs....

If you're looking to run some higher boost numbers let us know and we'll tell you how to do it without having to buy a new motor....

the motor was built by a good friend of mine who is a mechanic. he has built a bunch of these motors before. he ported and polish and gasket machted the heads, kb forged pistons, 3 angle valves, all the good stuff. i called him to day and asked him the same quetion i posted and he said that is normal and when we get my new chip he is burning for me that it will run hella good. im hoping he is right.

im hoping this mechanic of yours has a syty and has worked with turbo vehicles before???? id not, i dont think i would be running a chip from him.
the reason that your truck is faster at half throttle is because your ecm isnt seeing a bunch of knock and retarding the hell out of your timing. have you had datamaster on it? how much knock retard are you getting?

He ain't right, it is NOT normal, like others have said, get a new mechanic. I would not trust him with chip burning....or perhaps he's gonna get you a KB chip, which are the worst in the industry for our trucks.

If you can here it pinging then the knock is off the charts! No datamaster need to know that! But I agree, get it on there and see what it tells ya.
