A good chip and possible alky for a stock engine?

After reading about all the chips available and numerous setups for this truck, I just have a few questions. I was planning on taking it to a guy in the city for a tune, but I've heard to stay away from that shop. So now I really just want to attempt some of this myself. I've already got this truck running pretty smooth, but it does need the timing set better and I can tell the turbo is surging. It loses power after half throttle. The only time this truck pulls hard is in the mid-range. So I know it's not tuned properly, well, it's not tuned at all. It's just running, thats it. However, it idles smooth and runs fine when you're not in the peddle.

I have a stock motor with the typical add-ons:

AFR, new plugs wires and dist., Wideband 02, EGR delete with silicone hoses, Electronic cut-out with new exhaust, heads have been resurfaced and new valves installed, intake also cleaned, and I'm pretty sure it has a Walbro pump (it's louder than expected when I turn key on, sounds like my Buicks).

I'm wondering, instead of paying a guy to tune this and beat on my truck...I'd rather spend that money on a chip and possibly an Alky kit and then learn how to get the timing dialed in right. I figured I've gone this far alone (and with the help of you guys) that I'd finish it myself. What is a good chip that goes good with my mild setup? Would the Alky kit and a chip be enough to get rid of any KR?

alky will help get rid of KR. But thats more of a band aid if you already have a bad tune. It's best to try to get the KR to 0 or as low as possible on pump gas and a stock chip, before throwing more stuff into the mix... then you'll just be chasing more problems and making your tune more difficult. Could have some AFR issues if it's losing power past half throttle. Could be running too rich and bogging the motor down? Can't really tell without looking at a datalog.

So basically...get a tuner prgm on my laptop and connect to my truck first. I have a Moates ALDL connector that I found in the glove box, but nothing else .

I'd rather get my truck at 0kr without buying aftermarket parts like you suggested, thanks. Then the toys can come later :)

yeah you can get datamaster or "tune pro" err... can't remember what the other one is called.

but yeah, a lot easier to learn to walk before you run

TurboDig is also a great resource for tuning questions. You can send him your data log info and he will guide you assuming he is available.

That's a big IF HE'S available!

Yea, I have messaged him before and haven't heard anything back. Does anyone else have info on his 20g, 2800 stall, 11.9 build? Thanks.
