97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

I just found and bought a complete Typoon engine and Iam going to drop in place of my Vortec 4.3. I know I will have to have another ECM and wiring harness, but what other surprises am I in for? The deal was just too good to pass up $1500 for a rebuilt TY motor (only 77k original miles).

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

Obviously I am new to the site, but i have not been able to find much info on this conversion anywhere. I purchased my truck new and have kept it in perfect condition, but with 180K on it i decided to drop a new engine. Was going to go with a 350 but emissions in my state are very tough. I found the TY motor, had it checked out and discovered that it has less than 2% leakage, so i bought it. Any additional knowledge or direction for this conversion would be appreciated.

use the search button on top, this question is asked once a week.

its a bitch, not worth the time/effort, and if you do it, your truck will be fast, but probably have traction issues.

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

It's expensive but worth it if you have the time, money and patience to put it all together. I am not sure why this site has a conversion section because whenever a new person ask this question, all you get is sarcasm. Depending on what you got with the engine will determine if it's worth it. If you only have a long block, the other parts can be expensive and hard to find. The manifolds, upper and lower intercoolers, crossover pipe, ecm etc etc. The hardest part to find in my opinion would be the engine harness. Not everyone likes the old body style. Traction would be a problem but no more of an issue then if you installed a V8.

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

Thanks for the info. I have a performance shop installing the engine for me and i know it will not be cheap but i think it will be worth it in the end. I have the complete engine and it is squeaky clean however it is missing some of the parts you mentioned. I have the crossover pipe but not the down pipe (which i was planning to change anyway to 3"). Ebay shows an ECM but i am a little leary of buying this way. Do i have to use a stock ECM? Also, will the vortec oil pan fit this engine? The TY pan was badly damaged in the wreck. I realized that traction would be a problem so i am having a 3:73 installed along with traction bars and a few sandbags:) Any other ideas on traction?
I didn't realize that this would be such a problem with the other members being that there actually is a section for this very topic (that's sad cause you are right not everybody likes the old body style). I am a 39 year old kid that has never gotten over the musle car years and i will be at the track Nov 1st here in Atlanta if all goes well. I'll let you know how it all turns out in the end. Thanks again

the only problem some of us have is:
1) this question gets asked ALL the time
2) alot of these trucks get stolen, if you bought stolen parts it sucks for the orig owner.. of course proving it is next to impossible, but how would you feel..
3) the questions gets asked ALL the time.

good luck..
as for traction, slicks

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

3.73 gears will only make traction worse.

I personally would consider 3.42 or 3.08's. Plus 3.73 will not put the motor in the power band you want.

When I hear the word performance shop and syty I get very nervous and scared.

Yes I drive a Typhoon.
Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

Try a google search! I was going to do a simaliar setup in a n/a 93 s10.
I just bought a Ty instead.....But I am slowly collecting parts. Like I mentioned, there use to be a whole step by step write up on the net somewhere... I'll try and find it for you if you are serious. By the way what part of Atl are you from? I live around Mall of Ga. NE of Atl.

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

I completely understand smaug why people might get tired of this type of post and you are right it would be hard to find out for sure if this motor was not stolen other than i trust the guy that found it for me. I did try to search through this site for as much info as i could find before asking, but for some reason the site was really slow and i could not navigate too well. Sorry to be a broken record.
I appreciate the advice about the gear ratio that makes complete sense and i will take that advice. I will use slicks at the track too. Thanks JS (BTW the guy i have installing the motor is a personal friend that builds race car motors not to say that there won't be problems but i feel confident in his abilities.)
I live on the west side of town in Douglasville and i have performed numerous searches on the net but i really haven't found anything that goes into the kind of detail that i was looking for. By all means if you can send me something then your help would be appreciated bdydrspds. I'll send you a personal message with my phone number maybe we can hook up sometime i'd love to see your ride.
You guys are making me nervous about this whole thing. I don't mind dumping the money into it but i want it right. Thanks again

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

If you are not paying alot for the ECM off of e-bay - go for it or try car-part.com. Just make sure you have the correct ecm id number. The ecm was also available in a turbo sunbird if I remember correctly. I am not sure about the oil pan but my guess is it will work but you will have to install a fitting for the turbo oil return line. Stock 3:42 gears ssems to be the choice of most...I would get the motor done and then try other gears. I installed a ty drivetrain in a 92 4dr a year ago and it was a challenge but I still feel it was worth it. I am getting board with the body style so I am planning on getting a 95 body and doing a body swap.
For the members that a sick of answering the question 1. don't answer the question 2. stay out of the conversion section.
I am also an older hot rodder.....I'm 41 GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT

It will physically bolt up. I think I read the lower CCHE (intercooler) won't bolt in. You want use the 749 Ecm and I would assume some how integrate that with electronics (ie dash/tach/speedo).

You will probably go through a stock tranny and tires pretty quick. Unless the 97 have beefier rear ends, you will also ruin that with slicks.

Good luck getting your SyTy motor to pass smog.:rotf:

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

dgoodhue is right. tha stock trans will not hold up. I blew mine up in 2 days. Luckily I had the matching ty trans available.

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

I just had the tranny rebuilt, but i guess that might not make a difference. Is there anything else that can help beef up the stock tranny to help. Unfortunately the TY tranny was too damaged after the the wreck. I also had the drive shaft custom made because the stock shaft was crap. As far as emissions go I didn't realize this would be such an issue. Can you elaborate Beachin? Thanks all.

Quite a few of us have had problems passing a simple sniff-test out here in CA and other parts of country too.

Re: 97 Sonoma SYTY Conversion

Finished the conversion 2 weeks ago and i must say that it has been a challenge but well worth the trouble. There are still several small nagging issues but in all i am very pleased with the results thus far. I am experiencing spark knock issues and i notice that this is a very popular issue for these trucks. I have loads of pictures but nowhere to post them so i have been sending them to some of the guys via personal e-mail if anyone else is interested in seeing this project. The install is very unique in that the 97 ECM was used and many of the parts are mounted differently than the original SYTY set-up. We still have a lot of clean up to do and that will be donw this weekend. I will then have additional pictures of the finished product.
