Does anyone have a good spec listing for everying I would need to know for chosing parts for this truck. I have the 4.3 Z motor (LB4) and am tossing around the idea of mocking the Sy/Ty engine. Not so much worried about the drivetrain though. I am also thinking about doing a 3800 V6 swap and going from there. Can anyone offer up some good info, advice, sites and what not? Thanks.

well, if you're really serious about doing this, the following links will save you a little trouble on researching engine internals...your motor would need some stronger main caps at the very least as well as the obvious syty specific exhaust manifolds, upper and lower intakes, turbo and related accessories, ecm and wiring harnesses....most people here won't answer to inquiries such as yours because people pop in all the time out of nowhere asking the same thing then they disappear when they find out what it takes...if it was 'that' easy, every other 4.3 liter silverado would be turbocharged by now....personally, i think it would be a cool project for someone here to actually tackle....i've recently read about one in florida...

Yeah, I have noticed that most don't take kindly to the question but I can understand that. I have a hard time finding any info about this engine in general let alone what it would take to convert it. I mean how many damn times has GM revised this damn engine ya know. With the 3.8 it's easy. You have 3 series of 3800's and then the GN style and prior. Thanks much for the info though.

Actually it's pretty simple

Std 4.3 Z
Nodular iron main caps
better head gaskets
Pistons to achieve 8.35:1 compression
Multiport FI manifold unique to syty
Mitsucrappy turbo
cast iron manifolds to put exhaust through said crappy turbo
Air to water intercooler.
ECM from turbo sunbird 80's vintage
And there you have the mythical syty engine

What do most people R&R when building a serious build?

Most of the list above.

I'd source syty what you can IF you can get a good deal but wouldn't bother trying to duplicate a syty engine. You can do much better since you don't have any of the parts to start with

Headers
better turbo PTE etc.
Convert a manifold to FI
A2A intercooler
FAST or syty ECM
turbo cam
4 bolt mains
better rods Eagle,Oliver etc.

So you really don't need any syty parts.

i dont know,Nate....a 4.3 (or even a 3.8) in that truck may not be up to the task, that truck is a bit heavier than your typical s-10...it was put in that truck as a 'worker'..they even called some of those w/t's-you can really lean on those motors(n/a) and they will last a long time...with the time & money you would spend on hopping it up you could drop a v8 in there(plenty of room) and get some real power without having to mess with the ecm, harness, exhaust(like u would a turbo),ect...
i have a 95 4.3 z motor in an s-10 4x4 that i threw a Whipple s/c on and it has plenty of power,BUT if i could go back,i would probably forgo the s/c for a v8 swap (and saved myself a couple gs).they make some killer 350 crate motors with 350hp for reasonable money (hang a turbo of it if you must and hit 450 hp easy on relatively low boost)...if money is no object,go 402 or whatever the big block of the week is...drop it in and forget it.
i have enough time & money tied up in my bitch that theres no turning back for me...and i dont mind, cause it has plenty of power...but i WOULD of done a v8 if i had any sense...hind sight is 20/20.
YES,it would be a cool conversion, and if you have the time, money, and knowledge to pull it off...go for it!! but jamming 10-15+ psi of boost down a 4.3s throat is a risky proposition (even for GMC),just be prepared for alot of trial & error...

for what its worth...

You guys are awesome. I think with what Toolmann just gave me and the links listed prior I have more than enough info. The reason I mentioned the 3.8 is that I previously owned a 2000 Firebird and a 97 Grand Prix GT that both had the N/A 3.8 in them and belong to the Grand Prix club so I am very familiar with that motor and know just how stout it is on a stock bottom end. As far as the weight of the truck I wouldn't think it to be much heavier than the 3500+ pound Grand Prix. And with 200hp/230tq to start it is more than the 155hp/230tq 4.3.

I WISH!!!

my '95 4.3 tbi z motor came from GM rated @ 155hp(dyno confirmed 111 rwhp-before s/c install-pathetic...)
'93-'96 tbi z motors came @ 160hp
the other cpi(?) 4.3,like in the v6 extreme, were rated anywere from 190-205 hp
there are ALOT of variations when it comes to the 4.3...make sure you know exactly what you got in that truck before you jump in with both feet.

good luck

I already know that I have the 155hp/230tq 4.3 liter LB4 engine. The 200hp/230tq I was referring to is the stock N/A 3.8 liter Series II V6 that comes in the Grand Prix, Monte, Camaro, F-Bird and what have you. I had a Grand Prix previously and know how stout of an engine that really is and already have about $2K worth of engine parts laying around. I think that will be my better bet is just finding an engine and doing the swap. Then my next concern would be the MM5 tranny that is in the truck right now and whether or not it will stand up to the pressure of the higher RPM power.

toolmann: Where did you get your Whipple from? I looked online and only saw blowers for 96+ models. Should these still mouth to my 93 block and such?

as for the '96+ unit..i dont think their for a tbi.iv seen a few diff.ones,Powerdyne,Vortec...centrifical type blowers...if your a top notch fabricator, you may be able to make it work...
i got my Whipple from a speed shop in Cali. after a contact at Whipple tipped me off....the shop bought it for a customer who totaled his truck before install and stuck them with the kit...soo i was the hero when i called 3 years later and gave them 1/2 what they paid for it....they were soo happy to sell it they gave me a set of coated JBA headers at cost!!

last week there was a Whipple kit on ebay...sold for 800 bucks.they pop up there once in a while...

i know a guy in Cali that will make the kits, but he wants 5 people to commit $1000 deposits before he will build them.4g's for the complete kit last time a asked him...

i would post all the info to access the parts for building a kit but im sure no one here is that intrested, soo if you would like the info,pm me.i got a file thick as a f'n dictionary, full of part #s-contact #s-instruction-ect...you could probably do it for waaaay less than 4gs...
jwaller has been a priceless source of info & knowledge helping me get mine to run correctly  ...its come a long way...

Good deal. Appreciate the help. When I figure out if I am going to stay with the 4.3 or not I will drop you a line. Thanks again.
